Default High Elf trouble against Skaven

I'm a veteran high elf player that is constantly having trouble against skaven. The points value is 1250 and I need a list that can easily take down skaven with ratling guns and warp lightning.

Well, as a veteran and eccentric Skaven general I may eb able to help you...

I would tend to say you need two things: a mage and a unit of archers. Both fit perfectly into any respectable High Elf army, without tailoring it to your opponent (something I strongly oppose).

Ratlings are not what they used to be... They can, with the 7th. Ed rules, always be targeted, even when close to an allied unit! A single round of shooting, or magical bolt (whatever domain you are using) should easily deal with it.

As for the Warp-Lightning, try to cast Drain Magic, since you get the spell for free. I can't remember if you need to take High Magic in order to get it, or not... It will raise the casting value of the spell to high levels and thus greatly reduce the number of hits you will take.

A Lion chariot should then be able to strike at the weakened Warlock, despatching him for good.

then again... a dragon will jump to where ever you want and warp lighting cannons can only flee, not hold.

Yeah, but a Dragon Mage at 1250 points... risky.

anything fast will kill emplacements. Lion chariots, DRAGONS:evil:, and cavalry. And on a 1 to 1 basis, you can slay any vile ratman.

I would if you are trying to build a balanced army. A: Get a fair bit of fire power, anything that can move and shoot is good as well as some fast cavalry/chariot and you should be able to close them down a fair bit. The drain magic idea is also good but it would be ideal if one combination can preform both duties (Alowing an advantage gained on one flank to be pressed home and should still preform to your satisfaction when used against more standard unit types. B: You could try to fit a few high BS/Str ranged units and anything that can fly pepper them with arrows and thenb charge the bejesus out of whatever bothers you (The flyers are good for this as they can charge over interposing units as long as there's not a large target in there way). If you dont want balance and just want to kill some rats then you want as low armour Sv's as possible coupled with either really good magic or so many hard hitting and fast cavalry that your enemy won't know which way to point his dastardly warpstone fuled weapons. You also want to get as many ward Sv's as possible and anything else that will improve a units survivabilty is also good but try to get a decent amount of numbers as the skaven have loads of bodies and elves will be the best fighters mostly so you dont need heaps of elite units. Well thats about it for me so good luck i hope you kill all the little rats (Less of them for my empire army to slay).

Phoenix Guard 15 to 20 long form a line in front of your troops and use their ward save. Heck add a character with the Sacred Incense. Then you have a line of troops with -1 to hit and a 4+ ward that causes fear.

Add a unit of archers with a character and the Reaver bow.

1 Bolt Thrower, One unit of spear elves and some helms.

Heck I have even done 8 Shadow Warriors to block also.

Try it out. I have used the Phoenix Guard Conga Line as my friends have called it on several occassion. The 4+ Ward is just tough. Also they have a 9 Leadership by themselves and cause fear. Try it it works well Screening works well.

Now double that number of arrows and shoot them at the skavens as they make their slow way across the field because they have very limited long range weaponry.

As for the few pieces they have, as it sounds like you're playing against a clan Skyre player... tie up any jezzail teams and cannons with eagles and simply bombard the squads with the weapon teams using more arrows.

That's really all you need to do... lol...

The main thing that skaven relay on is there ranks so each shooting and magic phase just concentrate on one unit at a time this is because the onyl way that skaven win is by wait of numbers on outnumbering and so by cutting down there ranks it means that they lose leadership and from one round of shooting uyou can reduce there leadership and then hopefully cause a panic test on them
