I spoke too soon. Patrick Rothfuss is not a genius. But, all told, he's not a bad author. Just a little sloppy. Let me rewind a bit. First off, The Name of the Wind was a darn good book. Probably the best fantasy book that I have ever read. (Excluding, of course, anything by Terry Pratchett.) This makes The Wise Man's Fear all the more disappointing. The first 500 out of 1000 pages of TWMF are decent. They are cut from the same cloth as The Name of the Wind; clever ...
Patrick Rothfuss is a mother-friggen genius. Seriously. Any of ya'll read his Kingkiller Chronicles at all? The first one is amazing. Really well done. Artfully written, with endearing characters. It manages to be horribly sad but still engaging and readable at the same time. Reminds me just a bit of a Dostoevsky novel. (Which is about the highest praise I can give a novel. To me, the Russians were the best authors.) Also, I got a Barnes and Noble Nook for Christmas this year. I ...
So, I recently discovered an old British TV series called "Sharpe". Yes, apparently that's the whole title. It's based off some books by Bernard Cornwell, and was apparently a big influence on Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts series. It has Sean Bean. (Oddly enough, my obsession with Sean Bean has not lessened since the end of A Game of Thrones... Funny, that.) I watched the first few episodes, and let me tell you, Dan Abnett borrowed heavily from this stuff. Seriously. Gaunt's ...
Been a while. First things first. BUY THIS GAME. I don't care if your basement is flooded, your power's out, or there's three feet of snow on the roads. Get up from the computer this instant, go to you car or your bicycle, travel to the nearest purveyor of electronic conveniences, and purchase one or more copies of this game. It is legitimately a thing of beauty. Now that we've established my overwhelming bias, let's move onto the actual review. ...
Is it just me, or is Sean Bean totally awesome? Seriously. I am dreading the death of Ned Stark, because I don't want to see Sean Bean go from the show. (And, if you haven't read A Song of Ice and Fire yet, then I just spoiled it for you. It's your fault, though, really. What self respecting fantasy fan HASN'T read ASoIaF?) In other news, Tyrion Lannister is awesome, and the rest of the Lannisters are all painfully beautiful jerkwards. Seriously. Just looking at that kid that plays ...
