Ok guys, I play some of the specialist games and I was thinking of starting a Battle Fleet Gothic fleet and I was wondering if you the good folks of astro could help. The main questions I would like answering are What are the main advantages/ disadvantages of each race, what are the various ship classes good at and if anyone has any pointers regarding the game in general. Cheers.

well,.... in a nutshell you could say that imperial/chaos are quite evenly matched, not sure about orks as i dont play them or play against anyone with them, eldar can win as well but you need to use different tactics as they can move again on your ordnance phase, and can get different speeds depending on how they face on the table.
i would as usual, sugest buying the fleet you like the look of, as in most things, thats a good start and you will learn that fleet quicker and enjoy the games more.
i have a thread further down on different rules, nothing major but it works really well, move a ship each, then fire a ship each. also i have now finished all my stat cards so its easier than the fleet list, they now have point costs on them too.
just put them in a card protector and away you go, pm me if you want the doc, then just edit it for your fleet,
easy peesy

Your grasp of the English language is uncanny.

Battlefleet Gothic is a Specialist Games system with a lovely bunch of plastic and metal models, all aimed at having crazy Napoleonic-style space battles. Nearly all races are represented (some better than others...), and the rules are something fairly close to perfection.

Well, it depends...I've seen some cruisers in the friendly and local...still, the entire range is available online, give or take a few escorts. Did I mention how pretty the models are?

It was over on Warseer, if memory serves. He was talking, I believe, about a battle with an Eldar force including both Elrand Ulthwe and a fair number of Harlequins ("funny space clowns wiht teh silly hatz"). Unless Elrad was his way of spelling Eldar.

Glad to be of service.

Is there any reason that you can't order online?? if it is some technical reason then your local store manager should be able to help you if you go in and explain it to them. They're very knowledgeable you know.

They used to be on the Specialist games web site. God knows if they still are after all the changes. I have them on my harddrive though, so if you can't find them anywhere I can email them to you.

If you could that would be brilliant, they don't do them on the specialist games site anymore, just the models for ordnance.

Marticus
13-12-2008, 03:16 PM
ohhhhh
i dont know what vassal is though...

darknight
13-12-2008, 03:22 PM
right, all loaded and its all there, all the fleets, markers etc, vassal is an online game player, we used to use it for some of the card games we played,
just type vassal and download it, it puts an icon on your desktop, that you click on then it will download the latest version,
its all safe, so dont worry, i have the bfg mod which ill send anyone who wants it, you can practise using it off line, but without much funcionality, so ill go and check what settings we need to contact each other then we should be able to get some games in, who is up for it?

Marticus
13-12-2008, 03:45 PM
im up for it dude!

darknight
13-12-2008, 03:53 PM
cool, its a long time since i used vassal, but got online to my bfg server, but ill have to find out how it all works again.
put some ships and asteroids on a map, so its all there ok, first thing is go and download vassal and ill send you the bfg mod to your email ok?

Marticus
13-12-2008, 03:55 PM
no probs dude... am downloading vassal now..... prob wont be able to play today though can only use work machines and i finish in half hour.... but this sounds proper good my handsome.... a phrase only a westcountry male can get away with to another male without it being wrong lol

darknight
13-12-2008, 03:57 PM

wats vassal

Farskit

Vassal is a java application that allows you to play turn-by-turn strategy games, including (but not limited to) 40k and BattleFleet Gothic. Small sprites represent the models, you have also rulers, etc. The big fault point being the random generator for the dice, which I think doesn't really work.

So, it's a way to play BFG or 40k online, or in "hot seat", ie with two persons on the same computer (the advantage of this being that you can then use real dice...). However it is very, very, very far from being as satisfying or, well, enjoyable, than the real game.
