I was just having an idea.
Since almost all the fiction on this site is 40K, hows about a fiction contest where entries must be fantasy. You know, spice things up a bit.

You were thinking exactly what I was thinking. Fantasy is under represented on Astro! I support the idea!

I support this idea, and would be happy to jump on board and help set it up:)
could work well, I think we need to drive for more fantasy oriented stuff!:D
cheers

I can't provide any prizes other than people knowing that they won the story contest, but I would also be willing to set it up, as the moderator of a story forum on another site I've had practice :p (though I wouldn't mind entering myself... if no one is interested in coming up with the contest I can run it)

Well, we could also make a 40k contest, since I don't know any fluff for warhammer! XD
Carrelio

But that would miss the point, that warhammer fantasy is underrated here. Hell, it might even give you an excuse to learn a bit about the fantasy world?

Well, I'm saying we do 2 competitions. And if we only do Fantasy, I won't be able to write! XD

Great initiative lads, we'll discuss it in depth. In addition keep an eye on the competitionsection, Farskit has been working on a fiction contest.
In addition I've been putting together some rough ideas for the next instalment of the Astro journal. Since the last one was 40K (guardsman), I'm very much leaning towards WHF for the next one. Unfortunately I'm extremely busy till midway december, but I'll try to sort out some things before that so we can have a geneal vote for the theme / starting story. So more to come as soon as possible!

Ark says we should possibly hold off this contest until after the holidays, apparently there are a few contest coming our way which might interfere with this one.

Hmm, but I just have thought of this.
One of the comps coming up is a fiction contest involving 40k (that is all I will mention). If we have the fantasy one and 40k one running relatively simultaneously with eachother, maybe people writing one or the other will be more inclined to write for both rather than just one?
Just a random thought that passed through my head :)

I think it's a great idea! I've explored some fantasy fluff, mostly due to playing warhammer online, and it seems quite interesting. I'll be more than happy to join.

Cool! Great idea! I'd like to put in the name of Adrassil in but if it's based upon spelling and punctuation (which it most likely will be!!:D) I'll lose but it'll give me some push to start on that heroic elf character I made up story

If a man was judged on punctuation and spelling alone, he would be burned at the stake a hundred times over, spelling and punctuation are simply a part of the over all effect.

Well just some info on some of the races, particularly the Tomb kings :P
Tomb Kings are one of my weaker areas, but heres what I know about them.
They originate from the land of Nehekara, they were a great civilisation before the time of Sigmar but were obsessed with death and finding a way around it. They built great tomb cities for their dead, the Kings had their (still living) servants and warriors entombed alongside them; the warriors, having made eternally binding oaths of loyalty, stood to attention as the chamber they were in was completly filled with sand, sealing them alongside their King to guard him forever more. The priests, whose task it was to watch over their Lieges' domain and ensure no harm came to person, were to remain sentient and awake for the centuries but unable to leave their posts. Ready to rouse their Liege from their eternal slumber should a threat present itself.
Their civilisation prospered for several thousand years until a High Priest by the name of Nagash decided he did not want to spend eternity watching over the body and domain of his dead King. He conducted experiments as to how to extend life into the realms of immortality, as oppossed to spending eternity as a mumified husk. The Lahmian cult of blood drinking was the result, in other words, the first vampires were created as a by product of his quest for eternal life.
When the cult became prevalent and gained power the Rulers of neighbouring provinces of Nehekara decided to intervene, a great civil war erupted destroying much of Nehekara, laying waste to Lahmia completely and destroying most of the vampiric cult. I believe (though im not completely sure) that it was Settra The Imperishable that finally threw Nagash from Nehekara after defeating him, the seven survivors of the Lahmian cult fled, each siring more vampires with traits similar to themselves. Nagash having been defeated but not slain, fled to await his time. I believe he had gathered a force around him by the time of Sigmar, because there definatley was a battle between the two of them, which nearly killed the Man God.
Sigmar did drive off Nagash though and he went back into hiding in the mountains of the Old World where he still resides, awaiting his moment.
The Tomb Kings and Princes of Nehekara are awakened by their priests when there is an intrusion into their domain by the younger races, and they have been known to awake and attempt to expand their old domain through conquest to this day.
They are what the ancient Egyptians would have been if they had had access to the magic of the Old World.
Hope this helps and that it isn’t too long or too short.

I think if we did run this, the rules should be:
No more than 2000 words
Has to be fantasy
And would be judged on:
Content (how entertaining it is)
Accuracy (big fluff mistakes and you wont win)
If anyone needs help on background fluff, give me a bell and I'll tell you what I can.

Perhaps we could have some other categories, namely spelling and grammatical accuracy (not a big one, but I do think it's important and should have some points allocated to it.) After all, it will make entrants look over their stuff before they send it...
My two cents
cheers

I was thinking that. Yeh, we will have that in as well.
Personally Im not sure whether it should run at the same time as the 40K one, as that might just cause members to think they are already in one, why bother looking at fantasy?

Indeed. Perhaps sometime afterwards? We need to wait for the winter contest to be announced before we can finalise the date for this one, however:)
