View Full Version : Announcing a new little competition...

Captain Castus
29-06-2008, 07:45 AM
Ever wanted a reason to buy White Dwarf?

Well... Here's one! Next month WD will be giving away a free Ork and Terminator model from the new 'Battle for Black Reach' starter box...

A couple of years ago they did a similar thing with the 'Battle for Skull Pass' WFB set and Astro ran a painting competition for the models then (a Dwarf and a Night Goblin)... Which was won by yours truly! :D

So... I thought I do the same again this time around, the rules are simple...

1. There will be just one winner
2. You can enter either the Ork or the Terminator or both (to double your chances of winning ;))
3. The competition is only open to members of Astro as of 1/9/2008... Anyone joining after that date is unfortunately ineligible
4. Conversions are not allowed, this is a painting comp rather than a modelling comp
5. You can base the model how you like but extra credit will not be given for 'scenic' bases, a base that complements the model and it's paint scheme is what I will be looking for, as I said this is not a modelling competition
6. In order to be valid there must be at least three entrants (not entries) to make it a valid competition
7. After the competition closes I will invite votes by PM from all members
8. In the event of a tie I will cast the deciding vote
9. The terminator painted as an Ultramarine will get 1000 extra votes (just kidding! :p)
10. The prize will be a BL book, GW miniatures, paints or similar up to a value of £10 (GW prices, no cash alternative)

OK? Any questions just post them here... There's a few weeks until WD comes out... I'll post a closing date later on...

Have fun!

CC

p.s. I haven't asked any Mods about this yet... I'm assuming it's OK?

:D Count me in, the Battle for Skull Pass painting contest is what got me into Astro in the first place.....Adders dragged me away from the GW forums and I've stuck here ever since. Now all I need to do is pray and hope that my local store will actually pack the new issue in time.

Why did I not hear about free models? It angers me that I was not told free things were being given out. I'd have thought that being a Chapter Master and all, the Departmento Munitorum might tell me these things now and again... They KNOW how hard it is to get decent Terminator armour. Damned quill-pushers.

Captain Castus

I shall set up a separate thread for posting entries...

The minis will be available with the WD that comes out this week... So buy one and get painting everyone!

I shall set the closing date (provisionally) for September 30th... Which will give you all a month to get your entries done...

Good luck... And may the best brush win! ;)

One question though: some color schemes (like standard Black Templars) will look dull compared to others (like Grey Knights or Imperial Fists)

...so I assume the deciding factors will be attention to detail, neatness, shading inking and drybrushing the right areas, etc. rather than "first visual impression" (because not all color schemes can give you that) :)

Cheers,

the deciding factors will be attention to detail, neatness, shading inking and drybrushing the right areas, etc.

The winner will be voted for by members, so first impressions and 'impact' may still count...

But you are right in that I intend this as a painting competition and, as such, the degree of technical and artistic accomplishment should be the main thing...

They are great minis... I'm really impressed with the models in the AoBR set...

Yep... It's a painting comp... No conversion allowed...

You can base them how you like on the base provided, but 'scenic' bases will not be given significant credit... The paint job's tht thing that counts...

The later you turn in your entry, the:

1) less opportunity your competitors will get to copy some of your ideas subtly and then post their entry

2) the fresher it'll stay in memory of viewers

3) very lazy viewers won't have to bother to flip back pages to see your mini!

Another reason to enter this competition!!

Bolter & Chainsword and Da Waaagh are running a very similar (almost identical) contest!

Here (http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=144856)

If you enter here you can enter there as well! :D And stand the chance of winning an AoBR box set or some other stuff as well as my prize...

Hate to say smurf-mod, but the B&C are not allowing you to enter the same model from other forums.

There's an easy way around that one!

I'll just make my closing date after the B&C one and say that you can enter your minis into this competition after that one has closed... ;) (PM me if you're planning on doing this)

But... In order to do that there will have to be a change in the rules... Here it is...

"THIS COMPETITION IS ONLY OPEN TO ASTRO MEMBERS AS OF THE 1ST SEPTEMBER 2008 - MEMBERS JOINING AFTER THAT DATE ARE INELIGIBLE FOR ENTRY"

I'll make the (provisional) closing date October 3rd...

Now get painting! :D

i ended up swaping my ork for another termi so it works out for both players.

Hephesto
07-09-2008, 12:25 AM
Well guess what, got my copy today! And I have to say I'm mighty impressed by the Nob, don't get me wrong the termi is great as well. But the Ork just has so much character and GW finally picked up on one of my old conversions - a barrel-loaded slugga.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f105/hephesto555666/ork-sm.jpg

Two things though, feel free to ingore the slightly elaborate bases. Just wanted to make certain that should I ever use them for more than display purposes they'd fit in with my other troops. Secondly I did cheat a tiny bit as the journey home didn't do the both of them a lott of good. I had some other heavy stuff with me, leading to some damage to the Nob's slugga arm and some dents in the termi. Fixed the Nob quite well, don't think anything can be seen of the damage. The termi however has some battle damage as a result. Nothing to serious just some scraps on the right side of his body, so I had to use some green stuff but left some scratches behind. Hope this isn't a problem, not that I think I'll win here of course ;)

Not quite sure yet what I'll do with them, the Ork should be pretty straight forward. Though I might end up going all nutty and make him a warpaint-wearing feral Nob. The termi is more of a challenge, can't go chaos with him afterall. So most likely I'll be going with a Relictor....seems like I'm addicted to Chaos!

You cannot use the upgrade spure on the termie. Read the rules of the comp.

The Warsmith

And am I the only person who noticed the Crux terminatus on the termie seems to melt into the pad?

No.. It does a bit...

But that's the point! If you replaced it with a crisper pad you'd had an advantage when it came to painting it and this is a painting comp...

No conversion is allowed... Although you can drill out the storm bolter! ;)

*Sigh* So I just spent my afternoon painting my terminator green ( I know... wierd... especially since I've never painted anything green in my life... but it was a learning experiance?) And then I was like... "Dude! This guy needs some flames!" So I painted on the flames. Anyways, I was just putting on the finishing touch... the number VI for some reason... when I suddenly remembered... the Press Gang swords! A small explanation of this is... Press Gang is one of the greatest boats I know, the crew are the coolest people ever and the boat itself is wicked fast... as I realised how awsome the battle flag is and what a great emblem it would make (its a pair of crossed swords) on a space marine shoulder pad... I realised I had really let the team down on this one... as Press Gang's colours are blue and white... and if I put the swords on a green and orange model they would sence the disturbance in the force, hunt me down and skin me. So, short of repainting my model... I'm afraid I've done myself in... none the less, the model isn't all that bad looking in my opinion, and he had started out as a plan for a plain green with lighter green highlights sort of deal... so he's really come a long way... but I still kind of regret it...

Castus, if Skarfang wants his entry removed (as he stated earlier since hes leaving the site), that would leave only 2 Orks as contestants and then the Ork section of the competition would be invalid? (because according to you, there has to be minimim 3 entrants per race) Please explain.

Originally it was a combined competition... So overall only 3 entries are needed...

Simply PM your choices to me and I'll collect the results and publish the winners in due course...

If you have any comments about the entries I'd prefer it if you left them in this thread to keep the entry thread clear of clutter...

Thanks for the entries guys... Now... VOTES AWAY!! :D

I don't want to vote... lol... I feel that most of the entires are better than mine, and as such, not wanting to be disloyal to my own marine but not wanting to straight up lie I've decided I'd rather not cast a vote.

I think by entering the competition you've really given yourself an obligation to vote, but its your call.

Trygon's Ultramarine is definatly up there with the best! Although is it really a valid entry? Does having more than half the bits missing count as a conversion, or does it fall into the "My Dog Ate It" catagory?

I already voted and not even on my own Relictor :D

Well a conversion implies adding things to a model to make it better. My termie on the other hand is the victim of a parts raid.

Could be me, but wasn't this a pure painting contest ;)

It is. Its just that my termie loses out on a few catagories, such as how well the eyes were painted, the dirtying of the boots, shoulder pad icongraphy and drilled out storm bolters.

Just to make it clear Trygon's Termie is not a valid entry for the simple fact it was entered after the Comp had closed...

If anyone actually votes for it, I'll simple ask them to make a different choice... ;)

NOW COME ON ASTROITES!!! VOTE! It doesn't take long... :(
