Well guys, I\'m a little flustered. I know all the rules and such on painting yellow, but has anyone here found a good method to use? I have both black and White undercoat, although I do prefer black in most cases.

I will use white though, I\'m not so fussy as to stick to black no matter what.

Basically guys, I need a little assistance. Also, fluff wise, does anyone know the company shoulder pad rim colours as per index astartes? I\'m not sure what company to go for, but the idea is that my combat patrol are holding a small garrison to facilitate further landings for a colonisation. Obviously, being the mental terrain builder I am, I\'ve an idea to make this \'bastion\'-esque piece to resemble said garrison.

Having gone off topic slightly, I dont want to do red shoulder pad rims. I dont like it. If anyone has a link for any pics of Imperial Fists that would be cool as GW official site is a little thin on the ground.

Cheers in advance!

***doing white is the quickest way, doing black means you need a brown in between

Mostly all i ever see for shoulderpad trim for the imperial fists is black.

Damn it I forgot about the black rims! Devon, you just made my mind up for me. Black rims it is.

Anyways, heres my first stage on a white undercoat. Paint is still drying in these pics. I took some Golden Yellow, and Yellow Wash and water and mixed it 2:2:2 and did two thin coats all over. Next stage I\'ll show here when I\'ve done it.

This step sees sunburst yellow mixed with water and yellow wash to blend the yellows together. The pics dont really catch the difference between the two stages, but trust me, the difference is there. ratio of mix is 2:2:2 again.

Ok, I\'ve done all the yellow bits now, apart from the final sharp highlight, which gets left to the very end. these are allt the front shots.

As you can see the yellow colour has ended up nice and even, and this was my first ever attempt at an all yellow model, so you can take this guide for your own if you wish to try it out. I\'ll continue to post as I progress with the mini.

Your Imperial Fist looks great. Exactly the kind of yellow I like, a warm, golden tone. Not the cold yellow which is kind of terrible in my opinion.

Glad I could help Indra but all I have ever seen for trim on Imperial Fist is black I do not recall ever seeing any other color.

they have red trim in the marine codex, and ive seen the ugly green trim... and the white trim as well, it looks nice

so as i mentioned(not sure if you notice it Indra) i believe they follow codex formations for trim and such so black would be 5th

I\'ve seen both red and black. I think the red\'s a little better. More contrasting and eye catching in my opinion.

Well I\'ve gone for black and 5th company sounds fine to me. Not sure what speciality that supposed to be but hey, who cares? I\'m going for colours not fluff!

:)

I\'ve just re undercoated that black areas now... bit untidy, will post when I\'ve cleaned it up.

Ok here is the next pair of pics, I have painted all the black areas and done a highlights of grey, and also used mithril silver on all the metallic areas and then washed the whole lot with an Armour Wash (This is old school thin black ink, unless you already remembered this), to tone down the grey highlights as I mixed up a grey that was too bright. It tones it down nicely. I\'m happy with it now, as when I did the black areas first the bristles on the brush splayed and I didnt notice uuntil I\'d painted black on all the yellow bits... AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH!

Anyway, mostly sorted now.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f118/RonJonesLP/Imperial%20Fists/Marine1Step5002.jpg

I\'ve also decided to keep the boltguns seperate in future so I can paint them seperately. This was a bit of a challenge with the gun glued on, but the rest will still be assembled.

I might also pin a marine to be an interchangeable special weaponist, so I can change the special weapons over. If I do, I\'ll do a step by step to show you how I get on.

Sadly yeh, you\'d be wrong... but I never entered that many to be honest. Just never managed to be in the right place at the right time enough to enter. Any rate, I think my work is very good for tabletop standard, which is how I like it, but not quite competition standard. The day I achieve amazing non metallic metals (NMM) I\'ll say that I\'m gonna enter a compo.

Of course I\'ll be entering the Astronomican compo...

Hi Indra,
The figure looks great, well painted mate.
Can I suggest something for the transfers you mention were playing up?
I don\'t know if you did this anyway so apologies in advance if you did.
Anyway, put down a good gloss coat on the model where you want the decal. It creates a smooth surface which will prevent that \"silvering\" effect caused by air trapped underneath.
Then paint on a product called Micro Set, (produced by Microscale and available from model aircraft shops), Humbrol do a similar solution called Decalfix. What this does is soften the decal so that it conforms to all the nooks and crannies on the model. Let it dry and matt varnish the decal and it will look as though you painted it on yourself!
It\'s much quicker than painting your design on.

Hope this helps,
Steve

I originally wanted to handpaint anyway, but I thought that I\'d try transfers anyway, so when that went belly up it was no loss to change tack.

I really enjoyed doing this mini, it was a nice change from nids...

NExt batch I\'ll be taking more time, to get it better.

Actually, I\'m surprised at how quickly I painted them. I was expecting them to take a lot longer than they did. I think that its safe to say I could probably paint an army of marines fairly quickly to a decent standard. Although saying that, the colour goes a long way towards the speed of the thing.

Afer all, when its simply a case of washing the model in an ink/paint mix it is going to be painted quicker than via brushstrokes.

I think that whatever army of marines you choose, doing it with a set of washes is the fastest way to get them done and you get a nice even colour too.

Step 1)
Taking a 1:1:1 mix of water, golden yellow and yellow ink I paint the whole model.
Time: 2 minutes
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f118/RonJonesLP/Imperial%20Fists/Marine1Step1001.jpg

Step 2)
Taking a 1:1:1 mix of water, Sunburst yellow and yellow ink I paint the whole model.
Time: 2 minutes
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f118/RonJonesLP/Imperial%20Fists/Marine1Step2001.jpg

Step 3)
Taking a 2:1 mix of Sunburst Yellow and water I paint all the plates of the armour, avoiding the lines between plates to preserve the ink shading. 2 Coats.
Time: 5 Minutes
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f118/RonJonesLP/Imperial%20Fists/Marine1Step3001.jpg

Step 4)
I undercoat (1:1 mix Chaos Black and Water) all the black areas of the model: Chest Eagle, Boltgun, between the joints of the armour behind the knees, elbows etc, eyes and faceplate carefully with a detail brush.
Time: 4 minutes

Step 5)
I mix a black highlight with a 2:1 mix of Chaos Black and Skull White, and highlight all the black areas. Dont worry about the high contrast, step 8 sorts this out.
Time: 2 minutes

Step 6)
I mix up a 2:1 mix of Sunburst Yellow and Skull White and highlght the edges of the armour, tidying up any black over marks I may have made.
Time: 2 minutes
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f118/RonJonesLP/Imperial%20Fists/Marine1Step4001.jpg

Step 7)
I paint mithril silver onto the metal areas (Backpack vents, boltgun ammo clip) and Burnished Gold onto detail eagles and skulls (On boltguns, backpacks, helmets)
Time: 2 minutes

Step 8)
I apply armour wash (Thinned black ink) over all the metal areas, silver and gold, and all the black areas. This blends the highlights in.
Time: 2 minutes
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f118/RonJonesLP/Imperial%20Fists/Marine1Step5001.jpg

Step 9)
Detailing. I paint the purity seals and add thier scripture, the eyes and lenses. I also paint on the logos and identifiers and such. Then I complete the base.
Time: 5 minutes.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f118/RonJonesLP/Imperial%20Fists/Marine1Completed004.jpg

TOTAL TIME: 26 minutes

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f118/RonJonesLP/Imperial%20Fists/Marine1Completed001.jpg

I know the pics are a little out of sequence, but I did the mini slightly differently on the first shot and found that I had to make a few changes to this way. However, these additional two were painted using this guide. And because I did two at the same time it only took a total of about 30 minutes. I find that pairing up minis not only saves a lot of time, but it saves wasting paint too, as I can never judge the right amount to mix for the mini.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f118/RonJonesLP/Imperial%20Fists/3Fists001.jpg

Now, you can take this guide and apply it to any chapter, as all you have to do is change the colour composition. For example to do blood angels substitute the yellow colours for reds.

Golden Yellow= Red Gore
Sunburst Yellow= Blood Red
Yellow Ink= Red Ink

Patronising I know, I apologise, but its that easy. Give it a go.

Yeah, my painting speed really improved when I started painting on the train to and from work. I had 40 minutes to kill each trip and a lot of models to paint, so I used my time wisely. In the end I painted like 10 spinegaunts in 3 trips, when it used to take me four trips to do three.
