Well, for some reason I felt a massive surge of inspiration yesterday and downloaded the Bloodbowl Rulebook (http://www.specialist-games.com/assets/LivingRulebook5.pdf) and prited it all out. I\'ll be buying a binder today and storing nicely, and then from there, I\'m going to do something I\'ve always wanted to do...

I\'m going to build a Bloodbowl stadium so that the WGA (http://www.astronomican.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=14&Itemi d=51#uk) can play games in style. Naturally I think I\'ll have to post the progress of the stadium in the modelling forum, but I\'ll also post it here with links to the thread.

It really is an awesome game if you haven\'t ever played it, and the 4 minute turn rule really adds intensity to your play, as 4 minutes ticks away real fast...

Now, I aint got a sausage other than the downloaded book, so I\'ll be making all the markers and balls and everything as I go.

Keep those peelers peeled!

Right, little update.

I have planned to use MDF as the base board, with a layer of peeled foamcore for the field so I can carve it to resemble the squares of the game. The endzones will be open ended so I can butt on a seperate base with the dugouts on also to allow me to make dugouts for every player to customise and bring to games as well as providing storage for teams, and a place to stick things like counters and such. The sidelines of the pitch will be finished on the MDF in a manner as yet undecided, but I\'ll probably paint it and varnish it or something to make it look nice. Might put some fences up around the side lines AKA ice hockey style for coolness, but I have to be careful as I don\'t want masses of protrusions for the ease of storage. Might magnetise something for that so they can be removed.

Maybe do some plaster blocks with fenceposts in and magnets in the base, and use a mesh or something that will pull taut once the plaster based magnetised fenceposts are in so it can simply be rolled up once done to store and leave the board flat for storage.

This sounds like an outstanding project, typical of your ambitiousness. I love blood bowl, it\'s just the best game out there, and we\'re starting a local league, but I don\'t think to this extent.

Sound like yet another reason to visit the land of Magogs and bring my miniatures case with me.

Well you know me and terrain making by now... this ought to be interesting...

:)

Right, having thought long and hard on the subject of broaching this, I\'m going to get a 2\'x4\' sheet of 9mm MDF so that it won\'t warp, and a very large sheet of foamcore.

I\'ll cut the MDF sheet so it measures 30\"x24\" in order to give me a nice 3.5\" lip either side of the sidelines which I\'ll finish with a glossy black finish I think, also possibly featuring some floor beading I have lying around to \'frame\' the pitch along the sidelines, but not the endzones, as they will have dugouts butted up against them. I may cut the 30\" length in half to make the the two board halves to ease storage- to be fair this is probably the route I\'ll take.

This will leave me with 18\"x24\" of MDF which I\'l cut into 3 6\"x24\" bases to make three dugouts, one for each current proposed player. I\'ll make the dugouts to a general pattern, but I\'ll let the players customise thier own dugout, which I\'ll also design to be hollow with removable (magnetised?) lids, possibly lined with sponge to create a storage solution for team models and custom counters etc. I may even make some removable field goal posts for fnu for each team that can be stored in the dugouts and customised with the corpses of the other teams players...

Also, Generalismo Dave, being the genius he is, is going to make a countdown timer with some LED\'s with a start and reset button, as well as two score counter LED displays a well which I\'ll incorporate into a big freestanding scoreboard, which will also butt up against the side of the board, in order to make it dead cool to keep track of the 4 minute time limit on the turns and the scores as well.

So now, I\'m just waiting for the wife to get home from work with the car so I can go get the MDF and other bits and bobs, and maybe get started today on the basic layout. If I can get my local timber place to cut it that would really make life easier, but I don\'t think they will, so I\'m going to have to get the jigsaw out and cut it as straight as possible... which is going to be hard, since I don\'t have the hardware to guarantee a straight cut.

Having said all that, making the pitch itself is going to b the easiest bit... strip one layer of card from the foamcore, fastidously mark out the 1\" squares and then carve them at the corners with the pencil to create the indented markings, and then texture it after applying some damage to the rest of the foamcore. Easy. Then paint it and add static grass.

Naturally I\'ll take lots of WIP pics for you and put it here with a link in the Modelling forum too.

Wow big project Indra! I\'m looking forward to seeing it finished - esp. with those LEDs it\'ll look fantastic!

I\'ve also got a suggestion: how about advertising hoardings round the pitch using jokey products/items? I remember seeing a blood bowl action scene in golden demon (2002 i think) where they had and Orc stand with stuff like \'Alweyz Orca Cola\' and stuff like that. That would add that bit of comedy to it!

Anyways good luck! :)

Yeah indra gd luck with the project. Bloodbowl is the best and funniest game out there. I remeber in one game my humans played my friends skaven and i was losing 2-0 and at the end he only had one skaven on the pitch who was on the floor lol and i couldn\'t take this guy out. it was the best game i had ever played.
Anyway getting back to the topic sounds like an amazing plan and i have no doubt that you will pull it off Indra B) good luck mate

Well the 12mm MDF has been cut and the sheets of Foamcore have been stripped of thier card and glued down, and I\'ve marked out all the squares and carved them into the foam. I\'m currently looking about for an image to include in the centre of the pitch.

:)

The bases for the dugouts are ready to be built upon, but they\'ll come last.

PS: Pics taken, not yet uploaded, peelers peeled!

Not sure if this will be of any use at all, but there you go either way.

Right, here\'s the progress so far.

The materials used:

MDF 12mm sheet, 24\"x18\" Foamcore. The MDF is marked out into 30\"x20\" base, and 3 6\"x20\" bases for dugouts. There was a 4\"x4\' excess strip not yet used.

http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f118/RonJonesLP/Gaming%20Table/100_0476.jpg

Foam core simply trimmed to fit 1\" squares to the right board size in squares with a 3\" endzone because it looks better than a 1\" endzone.

Here\'s the bits cut out:

Here\'s the glue weighted down:

Here\'s the board marked for squares:

Here\'s te corners marked out in carving for the squares:

Here\'s the logo I drew onto the centre of the board, nice and general:

Well I decided it was for the best to sacrifice my 4 year old in order to get a good pitch...

Cool aint the half of it- I\'m going to be doing another thread in modelling to properly document the progress, and to give you a clue, we\'ll be having floodlights that work as well as a working countdown timer and scoreboards...

OK, but I have a request. When we have the Astronomi-con at some point yet to be determined, can we bring this pitch and host a blood bowl tournament as well as a 40k one? This would just be too outstanding an opportunity to miss!

Indra
04-04-2008, 02:36 PM
Yeah that would be cool.

Everyone playing would have to bring a dugout of thier own though, that way we could feature a \'best team\' and a \'best dugout\' competition as well.

That would rock!

:)

Indra

PS also, I wanna point out that in the modelling forum there is a proper dedicated \'professional\' thread regarding this table, so we can get back on the topic of Bloodbowl...

Right, sadly, I've not had much chance to work on this baby very much lately, but when I do I'll be updating you a little further.

But I really do think that when we do eventually arrange a gathering of Astronites that we ought to run a bloodbowl tournament in there, and I'll bring the board along for some good games too.

Would anyone else be interested in this at a gathering of astronites?

Man, I'd love to, if such a thing ever happens. Hell, I only live across the channel, and if I've got enough time the eurostar tickets can be pretty cheap!

Same here, a true gathering of Astronites would be great fun! Now to find some actual time....and a blood bowl team. I've always wanted to convert a team so this may be an cool idea for a future project!

Well I'm glad there is some energy for it! The great thing is you need only a limited number of models to play BB, so it's dead easy to fit a project in.

I tihnk that I already suggested it, but it might be cool to run a comp on the day we do a gathering for BB by means of 'Bring You Own Dugout' as well, so everyone can bring along a dugout customised to thier team to add a little extra fun to the BB games as well. Hell we could even invite people to make thier own BB boards as well to use on the day and to win prizes.

The thoughts expand beyond comprehension...

Interesting idea, interesting project as well. The fun thing is that we all need a BB gameboard anyway so why not make a unique one ;-)

Looking good!
I was thinking of playing this also.
I skimmed through the rulebook and it looks really interesting

Joy of joys... My 7 year old daughter has shown an interest in bloodbowl! All I have is the board game and the mini's included but that's enough to amuse the little lady. I don't think I'll be making a BB pitch anytime soon but this project has been very inspiring.

I just ordered my Skaven team... Just wish y'all didn't live on the wrong continent for me to have a game with ya.
