View Full Version : Rumble or Stumble – The Return of the Characters!
Skringly
15-11-2011, 10:38 PM
Ladies and Gentlemen… and Kharn.
I, Skringly, am happy to announce the latest instalment in our Venerable Rumble or Stumble competitions. This time we’ve got a rather “special” event if I do say so myself. And it’s open to anyone brave or foolish (take yer’ pick ) enough to step up to the challenge. Did I mention there was a prize?
Okay so hopefully I’ve now got you wondering you have to do for this particular Rumble or Stumble. The answer lies with Special Characters.
Your task is to paint a Special Character for any of the current GW codices or army books. Be it from the old Bretonnia army book to the new Necron codex.
The good news for those of you who like to get creative with their armies, or those who might not have a model for many of their army’s characters (new Necrons anyone) you are not limited to GW model.
If you want to kit-bash your own Crimson Fist Pedro Kantor or sculpt your own Grimgor Ironhide then go right ahead. However don’t worry if you are not a modelling wizard, because this is merely an option and you are perfectly fine to choose one of the many GW made character models.
The contest runs from today 15th of November to the 11th of December, that’s 4 weeks to work on your entry. Voting will commence from the 12th of December to the 16th of December and will be performed by you, the members of Astro.
The winner will receive a standard Warhammer 40K Infantry or Warhammer Regiment box of their choice, such as a Space Marine Tactical Squad. Perfect for expanding a new fledgling army or part of a larger force.
There will be another thread started to hold the entries later, post your questions, updates and general banter and smack talk in here.
Thank you all, and I wish the best of luck to any and all that enter. :skrall:

Indeed, very nice set-up here. And not the least because GW even promotes the use of your own versions of named characters. I'd better put my thinking cap on for this one.....wayy too many cool options and characters out there to pick something silly

Hmmm, way too many choices...
Ork Warboss, has been sitting around for 4 years odd, the old metal one with the outstretched arm and attack squig.
Ork Weird Boy, again been sitting around for years.
Ork Big Mec with KFF, Kitbashed from AoBR warboss.
Baron Sathonyx, no GW model yet and my Hellions need a leader.
Ratty Warlock, Island of Blood style.
Pointy Ear Wuss* Prince, again IoB.
Lizard Saurus Oldblood.
Skink Priest.
Vampire Lord, another one. They crop up everywhere ><.
Night Gobbo Shaman, a choice of 4.
Night Gobbo Boss, choice of 3.
Forest Gobbo Chief. OOP metal...
And a couple of others which I can't think of now.
I might actually decide which by the deadline...

112 miles? That's not far. In Australia, that's practically next door. Not a very good excuse! 224 miles = 330 odd km. the distance from here to Sydney, the next city.

Very cool ideas all round lads! I'm personally drifting closer and closer to using one of the random alien minis I have around to make a count as Telion. Shame there is no real sniper special character as I've recently come across the perfect bits for one of this, still Telion will do for the time being

That should look pretty cool alex, hope you can pull it off!
Depending on when my order arrives, or my sculpt finishes, I shall either be doing:

or

Another counts as Telion eh, I guess everybody with a non nilla space marine army is jealous of the stuff they get like I am. I cannot wait for a new DA codex I am sick of a generic chapter master having a larger weapon skill than Azrael. I am also jealous of the blood angels furioso/libby pattern dreds, as well as the lucious rhinos, razorbacks, preds, and vindies. Oh well my gaming friends are pretty cool so I have a libby dred and a furioso, as well as telion and an augmented stat line for azrael.

Not in this case  I have a leftover non-GW mini that, with some work, would suit the role and weaponry of Telion perfectly. In fact, I'll be using the guy as the leader for one of my Kill-Teams, so this contest is a great excuse to start working on those guys as well!

I used some bits from the high elves range my friend gave me for the lion pelt and head, I had to trim the lions ears though because he had pointy elf ears and real lions ears are rounded. Very nice looking Ragnar there it does him way more justice than the old metal one for sure, My favorite SW by far, I have read the first SW omnibus as well as the first book in the second omnibus.

An established character with rules, but not necessarily a model. So for Yarrick you could use the model or make your own, for Waz Dakka woudl would have to make one.

arkon: gs = Green (or grey) stuff. The epoxy that they use to create things like capes.
Orkgasm
25-11-2011, 09:34 PM
GS (aka Green Stuff (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat470007a&prodId=prod1095494)), is modelling putty used to fill gaps, sculpt bits/models, and to fix finecast...
There is also "Grey Stuff (http://www.waylandgames.co.uk/Gale-Force-9/Scenics/Grey-Stuff-Basic-Epoxy/prod_4735.html)"...which is commonly cheaper, but the abbreviation is the same. ;)

I had to tell a biology lecturer at UNI that Malawai Eyebiters, a type of cichlid fish, did not in fact have extended jaws to eat the eyes of other fish but in fact to get algae from between rocks. @ Luther: Thanks mate...the green is just the usual..."Snot Green", to "Scorpion Green", to "Sunburst Yellow", with a bit of "Skull White" thrown in to flatten it. The purple metallic is much more simple, just a dab of "Lych" with "Boltgun" as a base...and a bit added to "Mithril" for the highlights...trying to get the metallic alchemy right. I used purple to denote a "royal" status. I haven't even hit the airbrush effects yet... :skrall:

I'm afraid I'm out as well, been bogged down studying all week and a friend just gave me tickets to the Arch Enemy + Chthonic tomorrow evening....which sadly accounts for all my free time till at least the 16th >_<
So, sadly, my count as Telion is going to be collecting dust till after the holidays when he will be joining and upcoming Killteam. Here's a shot of the 'guy', rather happy with him to be honest:

And while I'm at it here's an early wip on one of this future team mates, which may already be my favorite conversion ever

Work on the weapons, golds, gems, and some cleaning up. Still needs highlights, washes, and some detail work:

@ hwd - go right ahead!
@ Skringly - unfortunately I have no idea, it has been in my bitsbox for over a decade and only recently found a use. Could be something from the Rogue Trader era, but I haven't been able to identify it. Real shame, really would have like to have gotten my hands on a few more

Old metal lizardman head maybe ? Looks pretty damn sharp so far :) Are you going to trim off the extra finger on his left hand ? How are you doing the body ? Curious to see how he turns out - Are you doing "Alien bounty hunters" for a killteam by chance ?

comparison shot with a wolf guard, I increased the height of Ragnar slightly at the torso / leg junction which you can see here. Its very slight, im making a Company Commander not a Primarch, but as the Jarl he needed to be a bit larger I thought...

Awesome looking Imhotek there, Grot!! :skrall:
I really like the more "subdued" palette in contrast to my own...and I'm stoked to see someone else using some blue on him, as opposed to the studio paint. Great minds think alike! ;) What technique did you use for the rather red metallics? A "Baal" wash, perhaps? Or is it the light? Sweet contrast overall!
I'm chuffed to see another Bubba in the race....this is going to be a great competition.
Insofar as my entry....the cape is done, and though I was planning "lightning effects" for it, I don't think I'll have the time to do them. It still looks decent none the less, however, I just finished a 13 hour work day...and likely will work a 14 tomorrow. So I'll just have to focus on a few washes, and finishing the base. Pics to come on Sunday...I have until the deadline in my timezone, yes?

Still needs another drybrush or two of progressively lighter greys on the wings, highlights on the red and metalics, and washes all around.

Thanks for your kind complements Orkgasm!
The red metallics are actually a double Chestnut Ink wash over a Burnished Gold Drybrush. Came up with the paint scheme a few years ago when I got back into the hobby and still had my old inks laying around. I had about 4000 ish points of my Necron Army that I was never able to come up with a paint scheme for, so a really basic gold drybrush over black with a chestnut inking seemed to do the trick.
l had knocked out about half of the army in a few weeks that summer, little knowing that Chestnut Ink had been discontinued. Luckily, I was able to finish the army with a mix of Brown and Red Inks. Recently I was given an Eldar Army and hobby materials by my youngest brother, and sure enough, included in the mess o' stuff was the liquid gold that is Chestnut Ink.
Also, thanks to Tallarn for the pic fix!

@ Grot: You're welcome...it's great work, and a fantastic entry! I remember my old inks...Devlan is great and all, but the washes never really give the richness that the inks provided...
@ Foxy: Absolutely brilliant, mate!! The red looks nice and deep, and the green contrasts are a great touch! I can't wait to see some proper daylight pics tomorrow... :skrall:
@ Tallarn: That was funny...I watched it five times laughing hysterically. Yes, I'm easily entertained...
Bubba is done...complete with crappy night time phone camera pics. Much like Foxy, better pics tomorrow morning....

Really like the base on that guy Foxy, is it a resin one?
Badrukk still looks the same as in my last pic, so highly unlikely I'm gonna make it :banghead:
Luther its just some broken gs .
Orcus apparently the little gibbery hymadrawthingy angered the gods of chaos and they turned it into resin ;)
