I have recently developed a method for painting stubble onto faces for that 'grizzled' look and I though a wee tutorial was in order

Its very very simple really

1 - Paint the face as normal but leave off the final highlight layer

2 - mix 3 parts badab black, 3 parts devlan mud, 1 part codex grey and 1 part water to make a thin greyish brown wash.

3 - apply in thin layers to the lower half of the face - where a beard would be really. I tend to apply more layers to the neck and under-chin areas to add shading, and slightly less at the edge of the stubble on the cheeks where there would be naturally less hair

4 - apply the final highlights to the face to clean up any mistakes and to lighten the eye area as required.

5 - make yourself a lovely cup of tea and admire your handwork!

Some examples of this stubble method;

Nice and concise. I use a similar except mix a slight bit of the dark flesh tone in.

Hmm I wonder if this would work for painting head stubble on baldy Space Marine sergeants...

Is anyone else seeing targeted adverts for laser hair removal, hair regrowth, and hair colouring products?

Nice tutorial by the way!

This is a really nice little tutorial and a technique I've used on some Guardsmen to good effect. Well written and concise.

My only comment would be to remember that it is not usually the entire bottom half of the face that gets covered in stubble when men don't shave. There will be areas that will be lighter because of this. Another thing I find I had to make sure of was that the stubble didn't stand out too much from the rest of the face. Blending the stubble-effect into the skin-colour of the cheek worked well for avoiding this.

Great tutorial hwd, and I hope we can see more soon!
