View Full Version : First try at NMM
12-11-2006, 06:43 PM
So I thought I would give it a go. It has come out alright, patchy in the photo more than in real life. It is missing something so if anyone out there can do NMM then please let me know!

What does NMM mean?
12-11-2006, 07:06 PM
Non Metallic Metal
When people paint this well, it is painting a metal area to look like metal without using metallic paints.

AR! That explains a lot, i was wondering why there was just a metallic foot, in fact i thought u had used metallic paints. so good work! :)

well here are some things:
light never hits dead on, so some spots you have the light hitting isnt natural and this will affect your judgement to see it as metal
the next, light always hit the same things the same way...what this means is, if light hits something rounded on a certain angle, it hits everything rounded on the same angle(example would be your shin and knee, the light is hitting them at different angles, which throws you off as light doesnt magically bend :P)
next, when shading a rounded surface if you leave \"lines\"(vertical/horizontal) you will take away from the fact its rounded as your eye will no longer view it as rounded(same when drawing)
you might consider a bit more contrast as this really brings out NMM effects
and of course smoother blending helps to mke it look nice, but you dont need it to be smooth to get the overall effect(it can be very blotchy and still give the metal effect, the effect depends solely on placement of light/shadow)
uhhh i think thats it :) hope it helps ;)
12-11-2006, 07:48 PM
Aha I see now! I know for a fact I was painting the differnt layers on the metal in rectangles and now rounded. I\'ll give it a go with better precision.
12-11-2006, 07:54 PM
i should also mention, your paint looks a tad thick, could be the photo
12-11-2006, 08:03 PM
No it is the photo, my paints were a little to thin at certain points. I re-did the kneepad and shin and it looks MUCH better. I\'ll get a picture up ASAP
12-11-2006, 08:25 PM
*no such thing as too thin unless its water :P
glad to hear it helped ;)
12-11-2006, 08:27 PM
It has helped ten fold! Heres the picture. You are looking at the kneepad and shin, ignore the boot.
That is the best picture to show what it really looks like, without brightening it or darkening it too much.
12-11-2006, 08:33 PM
ahhh ya much better big difference eh? for such a little detail hahaha
however you might want to brighten it closer to white, or darken the shadows if you want a darker metal
12-11-2006, 08:35 PM
12-11-2006, 08:37 PM
Yeah I probably will do a thin line of pure white to make it pop more.
One question though, I want to do this to the other leg but it is facing completely the wrong way and away from the light source. any ideas on how to make the other leg look good?
12-11-2006, 08:54 PM
basicly you do the same thing, light will have to hit it at some point
the only difference would be you would have the darkness to it, so your bright spot instead od white might only be codex grey
the contrast is created by going from black to bright quickly, speeding up your blending, it can still be smooth but the blending isnt as gradual

Ah right! This NMM is hard to get your head round at first
Ill update tomorrow when more of him is painted.
13-11-2006, 06:43 PM
Heres the updated picture, hope you enjoy
13-11-2006, 06:50 PM
lookin MUCH better ;) congrats
13-11-2006, 07:13 PM
I thought they were real scratches at first :P
14-11-2006, 04:58 PM
Got some progress done last night. I hope this picture isn\'t too dark. Only the shotgun, chainsword, boots, trousers and bits and bobs to go :pinch:

WOW! thats amazing! Well done!
Cant wait to see the finished mini
14-11-2006, 06:21 PM
***just as a suggestion before you finish, in comparison to the nmm your other colours seem to lack true depth, i had this problem myself, and the best way to fix it is this:
shade the green with blue or red(mixed with black if need be) it will bring out the depth
if you want your main colour to be the darker shade of green you have there, make sure its the most used colour, while the bright spots arent necessarily always the very edges of everything(example would be the \"box\" around his abbs, it wouldnt be a box with actyal light)
as for red try shading with purples and blues
contrast is the key because the minis are so small
lookin good ;)

I\'m seriously impressed, great work. House Orlock if I remember correctly, can\'t wait to see it finished
14-11-2006, 08:07 PM
Good job there mate. I think that a step by step guide might be in order...
14-11-2006, 08:16 PM
Hey Starks, I am having problems NMM-ing the barrels of the shotgun. I have seen in some places where the reflection is an \'-I-\' shape as opposed to a straight line. Any tips?
Thanks everyone for the positive comments

Looking very good!
14-11-2006, 10:37 PM
quite nice, try adding a hourizen line in there to show where the light hits the object
14-11-2006, 10:49 PM
I may do but that is more common on shiny metals not dull shotgun barrels and armour
14-11-2006, 11:01 PM
i dont have the model or really know what it looks like...but you might get the effect better if you fade it...so brighter near the end of the gun(as it is raised at the end) and darker towards the grip
usually on a long cylindrical object there will be one bright spot, and then the line continues it down the object, but its not quite as bright and fades the further away it is
15-11-2006, 01:36 PM
Here we go, just about finished. I am VERY pleased with him

No kharma raise yet I have to wait for six hours trust me it will be done.
15-11-2006, 03:49 PM
right now itd be about a 7.0-7.5 ish from me, maybe even a bit higher(7.8?) once i see him on the base and completed
i cant tell what colour the pants are, the green vest could use a bit more contrast, and the grenades are a bit sloppy, also not a fan of the red and green scheme, i think it makes him look too happy and steals away from the nmm and darker tones
15-11-2006, 03:53 PM
Dude that mini rocks.
8 outa 10!
15-11-2006, 04:18 PM
The picture really takes away the quality of the grenades and black trousers/sleeves. In real life they have a slight purple tinge to them.
The red headband is there to signify him as an Orlock gang leader
15-11-2006, 08:50 PM
Well I think you did really great work there Archon! Inspiring stuff, and talking about inspiring stuff time for some \'Karma\'
Are you planning a complete orlock gang?
15-11-2006, 09:00 PM
Thanks Hephesto :)
I have about 4 unpainted orlocks that I shall probably give a go . This gang leader was fun to paint and a host of them will hopefully improve my painting skills even more.
Necromunda gangs are a nice change from the galactic battles raging in the galaxy. What is more important then getting your heavy gunner a boltgun to really take on those rivals
