We were chatting on here about warmaster a few weeks ago, and lots of people told me i should do a quick battle report. I did ask where the report would go, the reply was here. It's the same sort of genre.

So here goes...... any questions you've got about the game i'll be happy to answer.

A few bits and bobs that'll help you follow the report easier>>> a unit is 3 stands, you can put up to 4 stands together to form a brigade (the reason to do this is to make it easier to move) For example in the first pic when i've typed 2 Goblins & 2 Orcs that's a total of 4 units (12 stands) Each orc unit is 30 orcs.

You'll also notice that characters are on their own (a lot of mine are on 2p coins), you can attach characters to units but they aren't very powerful. Characters are used to order nearby units to move.
All cavalry and chariots move 30cm. All infantry moves 20cm.

Bretonnian’s against Orcs

A warmaster battle report, 3,000 points

The two significant terrain pieces were the hill on my left, and the forest to the right. I intended to reach the hill first with as many infantry units as I could. I split my brigades apart so I had roughly a 2:1 ratio of character to brigade.

Break Points
Each armies break point is half the total number of units. When that number is reached, your army withdraws from the battlefield. Bretonnians have a unique rule. The only units that count towards break points are knights, grail knights and pegasus knights..... never mind the pot-washers.

My Break Point with Orcs is 20
Bretonnians Break Point is 7 …….. (he had 3 grail knight units and 10 knights)

My list was;
Orc General
1 Orc Hero with sword of fate, rides in a chariot
3 Orc Heroes
1 Orc Shaman
1 Goblin Shaman with scroll of dispelling
2 Goblin Shamans

13 units of Orc Warriors
12 units of Goblins
9 units of Chariots
3 units of Boar Riders
3 units of Rock Lobbers

Here’s the deployment.

The Bretonnian’s win the first turn. We’ve decided we’re playing 6 turns.

TURN 1

The Bretonnians weren’t organized at the start of the battle, which meant not much movement. I assume they were praying to the Lady.

http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/waylander2/batrep005.jpg

With my orcs first turn I manage to get a brigade on top of the hill, most other units behave themselves and move up. My rock lobbers kill a unit of squires.

TURN 2

On his turn he’s much more successful with orders. My right flank is now looking overwhelmed.
http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/waylander2/batrep008.jpg

On my left flank the boar riders and a chariot unit smashes into and destroys a unit of squires, then a unit of knights. All the chariots die in the attack, and the boar are left exposed. Still worth it though.
I position another brigade on the hill

TURN 3

Noble Bretonnian knights countercharge the boar riders and wipe them out, for the loss of one stand. (the rules for bretonnian knights are... if they can move by initiative and charge the enemy they must do so. They are also immune to terror)
Squires and archers concentrate fire on the orc unit standing on the hill, driving the orcs back. They are determined to capture the hill.

On the other side of the battlefield 3 more units of knight charge the orcs and goblins. The before and after results can be seen in the next two pictures.

Things are beginning to look bleak, but I do still have a huge brigade of goblin chariots to call upon. Unfortunately they don’t charge, and I’m left at the mercy of those knights next turn. But because of their position they will draw the knight away from the main action.
In the centre of the field it’s more positive. I can target those orange knights with rock lobbers, and charge and fall back with chariots.

TURN 4

A cheer erupted in the Britannia ranks. Peasants had the audacity to charge my goblins on a hill, and they managed to cut them down with their sickles and scythes. Well done peasants.

At the opposite side of the field, knight and grail knights make short work of those chariots and kill all but one unit. The knights then sweep around intending to rear charge the orcs.

My army reacts and turns to face those knights, including the rock lobbers.
Here’s a picture showing the remnants of my right flank.
http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/waylander2/batrep017.jpg

Here’s the situation on my far left. I’m trying to bring the cavalry and chariots into play. I’ve driven back his archers with magic. I’m trying to bait him with infantry on the hill.

TURN 5

The Bretonnians are close to winning at this stage. If they can finish off units, they’re almost there. I’ve broken about 4 units of knights, 3 more and I have him.

An aggressive charge in the centre sees squires, grail knights and archers (supported by peasants) charging a long line of goblin archers. The goblins didn’t stand a chance, as shown below.

Surprisingly a frontal and flank charge by 2 units of knights against my orcs on the hill fails to inflict enough damage on the orcs. The knights lose momentum and wheel around. My boar riders and chariots position themselves for next turn.

Chariots take out the grail knights, with a little bit of help from an orc hero in a chariot with a magic sword, and the waaagh spell.
http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/waylander2/batrep022.jpg

My right flank is no more. The last chariot unit flank charges some grail knights, takes down 2 stands. So close, I now need just 2 units. But he only needs 3 to win. This is going to be close.

TURN 6

Most of the knight units have to charge in. No more caution, Enchantresses join units attempting to magically shield the brave knights. Heroes join units to add their combat prowess. Alas the spells don’t succeed.

The battle on the hill results in the orcs beating back the knights. The orcs need to kill one more knight unit to win, the Bretonnians need 3 more.

Adjacent to the hill Bretonnian knights cut down an orc unit. Bretonnians need 2 more.

http://i491.photobucket.com/albums/rr279/waylander2/batrep024.jpg

This final fight could win it for the Bretonnians. Two stands of knights and one stand of grail knights charge an orc brigade. The first melee sees the knights victoriously defeat the closest unit of orcs (both sides now need to kill one unit to win the game)

The injured knights advance into the second unit, tasting victory. Again their lances hit the mark, splintering wooden shields. The horses trampling orcs into the ground. But the orcs were too many. Surrounding the grail knights, their crude axes slicing into horse and man. Butchering the unit, and giving me a very closely fought victory.

We both really enjoyed that game. Very difficult to call until the last turn. Hills really made a big difference for my infantry, without them i wouldn't have held back the cavalry charges.

Thanks for posting this Waylander, I enjoyed it, a great battle. It also had my Fav army....Damm shame they lost! *grins*

It was almost like a hollywood battle, with it ebbing back and forth and the final turn meaning so much.

I fought about warmaster once, but don't like the idea of painting the armies...too tiny for my manhands

Cheers Faileas, glad you enjoyed it. Yeah bretonnians are great, he does normally have at least one trebuchet in his army (you're limited to 1 per 1,000 points)

It was very close, went down to the last combat. If those 2 knight stands and the single grail knight stand had killed my orc unit (3 stands) he would have won.

It's easier than you think. The trick is to use "Badab Black Wash", i don't normally like GW washes but that one is brilliant. You don't need any shading/highlighting or picking out any detail. That wash makes it look like you've shaded.
