View Full Version : Chaos Conversion Project

hey all, cheers if your reading this. I am doing a conversion of a chaplain into a chaos marine, he is very WiP and I would love it for some tips and stuff. The green stuff is the Eye of Horus/Terra

Crude, simple, but highly effective

Like it

22-09-2006, 03:23 AM
Cool, thanks alot. I was thinking of making fur to drape over his shoulders but if I do that I will have to try tomorrow. Have you tried making fur before?

22-09-2006, 03:42 AM
soooooooo cool, *plz read this fast*

22-09-2006, 03:45 AM
it looks good however the only thing that looks funny is the sword, the handle looks to large for him

22-09-2006, 03:52 AM
Thats a good point actually, I\'ll have to do some green stuffing to blend it. Glad people like it though :P

I like it, though the one problem for me is (if you\'ll allow me to be blunt) that the head just doesn\'t work in my humble opinion. It just looks slightly too rightious for a Chaos model (though the painting on it is superb btw).
I\'d personnally perfer a non helmetted head. lucius the eternal would be great. Really sick looking and you could use the whip instead of the powersword if you want to listen to mark\'s suggestion.

Anyway best of luck with it and its looking great (epecially for a WIP).

22-09-2006, 04:04 AM
Its fine to be blunt, helps me see what could be improved:) . I reckon the head will look less clean if I put some fur shoulder warmers on him. If not then I shall get my red pointy scraper and gouge a bullet hole or two :P
I am reluctant to do anything to legion specific as I am not sure whether he will be black legion or word bearers at this time.

22-09-2006, 11:49 AM
fur is the easiest you\'ll ever sculpt

first, if its an area with a lot of open space, place one layer down smoothened and shape it to the desired shape(thin piece) let it dry

next layer, add some GS and start doing the actual fur...smooth out fingerprints and such, then push in and pull to the side to form a little raised piece, keep doing this

make sure when you start doing the next row of hair to make the hairs short rather than long, fur is short hair is long

22-09-2006, 08:45 PM
you dont have to layer i do it all in one go, as long as you leave the gs to dry after you placed it on for a bout 20-30 mins it will be fine

22-09-2006, 10:00 PM
for an area with a large gap its best to, if the GS is being attached to something (in this case his shoulders) then you dont need to because theres enough support

sorry i for some reason started thinking cloaks and loin robes...my bad!

22-09-2006, 10:42 PM
Thanks for the tips on fur you two, I had a go at it just now and think it looks cool. Ive accesorized him a little and have been thinking on some cool fluff to do with the skulls and the huge scroll as well. Whatda think?

22-09-2006, 10:53 PM
well i suggest either going the Torquemada route with a big chunk of fur, looks more menacing and intimidating or keep it thin and do

if you wanted a cloak you could have it slung to one side(because of the backpack) and have it come over his raised arm slightly

what are the colours planned?

22-09-2006, 10:55 PM
I\'ll have to bulk the fur up, it was in my mind to do so but I was short of time a few minutes ago

I was thinking either black legion or Word bearers, WB because of his chaplain appearence

22-09-2006, 11:03 PM
if you go with gold trim and the red armour, a nice deep dark brown would look nice for the fur

if you go for silver trim, you can go a bit lighter brown and it will look fine

consider this for scrolls:

mixing in between if you wish

dark red
brighter red

23-09-2006, 04:47 AM
Fur has been increased and looks a bit scarier but unfortunately no pics at the mo. I will most probably feather the highlights of the armour to really make him stand out, I havnt spent alot of time on one model recently. I forgot how I painted the skulls and mask before but I have desert yellow so Ill work something out :P

23-09-2006, 04:52 AM
the fur needs bulking out a little and the hair needs defining a little more what sort of tool are you useing ?

it looks good btw i like the added trophies

I\'m using a tool that came with an old art toy, you scratched this black background along lines to reveal the gold underneath and eventually the picture. So it is very sharp with a nice point. I have actually seen my fur making skills increase since that updated picture and I hope the fur is better defined. That reminds me, I need more greenstuff!

23-09-2006, 10:07 PM
Just to show you what improvements I made on the fur, is it still to flat do you think? The texture on it I think is cool, should look tonnes better painted a nice brown or grey.

Plus you can actually tell what was the last bit of GS added, the blue stripe is running out fast

23-09-2006, 10:30 PM
just for emphasis: SMALL HAIRS....your hairs are too long and it looks like hair rather than fur, also dont let all the levels of fur line up with each other, just like building a house with bricks

also i think it looked better not going down as far on the body

as to the GS, i personally like more blue than yellow, i like it darker because i find it better to work with on almost everything i do, so thats actually my usual colour :P

you should take a look at the torquemada model to get an example of what we mean by bulk it up on the shoulders, it looks alright now, can see improvement which is always good, but shorter hairs, more bulky :)

23-09-2006, 10:54 PM
As well I really cant be botherd to make the hairs short, they look good to me. Hes wearing human hair on his shoulders you see. B)

26-09-2006, 12:42 AM
Added some paint to him, can\'t photo red very well but I gave it a shot. here ya go!

26-09-2006, 12:46 AM
looking good

26-09-2006, 12:47 AM
cheers Dyp, I tried to make the armour look dirty and old

26-09-2006, 12:55 AM
wow thats some really nice tones in the red. how did you do it and keep thepics comeing

26-09-2006, 01:00 AM
Well the deal with the red is that I did so many layers and two washes that I can\'t remember the sequence at all, I hope I dont spill paint on it. It starts off with dark flesh base, then add some scab red and do a layer, then some more and layer it. Then mix a tiny bit of dark flesh with blood red and do some highlights. Then mix chaos black with blood red 2:1 ish and make an ink to wash the model with. Then it\'s another coat of scab red and black about 2:1 for a layer and the final wash which is blood red and black 1:1. After that highlight with blood red.

I think :S

26-09-2006, 01:02 AM

is that a purity seal on his leg ?

26-09-2006, 01:05 AM
looking good.

And it is most likely an Impurity seal you see.

27-09-2006, 07:57 PM
nearing the finish line with this guy, only the writing on scrolls to do now. here is what he is like now and what he looks like compared to a mini I painted for a painting comp about 1-2 yrs back. Of course the picture daemon has arrived and I can see all the mistakes that I have made, now I don\'t think I did a very good job at certain areas

If you look casually at it you can see all the nasty paintwork I did and never knew about
Ill try and get some better pictures soon as well, some of the colour like the helmet got a bit washed out
All I need now is a name for him to go on his chest scroll!

looks good, the tau trophie is a great touch ;)

27-09-2006, 09:57 PM
not bad at all, nice paint job

27-09-2006, 10:06 PM
Thanks for the positive comments, really helps :) . My favourite parts are the armour and the helmet I did, although the helmet looks better in real life.

28-09-2006, 01:26 AM
The model looks better than the one for the comp me thinks;)

28-09-2006, 01:27 AM
yer your right fridge. i thik you deserve an extra karma boost for improveing your skills *pat on the back and karma boost*

28-09-2006, 01:29 AM
Good painting and converting. A good improvement from teh painting comp mini. *Karma booost*

28-09-2006, 01:31 AM
Wowza! Really pleased you liked how I painted him. He may be an Aspiring champ for a Word Bearers unit soon, why not the apostle I hear you ask? Well it means I can paint a nasty unit of chosen and take a month on the Dark Apostle himself :P

04-10-2006, 01:52 AM
This looks great, superb conversion job.

You really got me motivated you get one with my own wordbearer stuff. Just can\'t seems to get away from the taint of chaos :) , which is a good thing right....

08-10-2006, 11:24 PM
First of thanks for your reply on my wordbearer stuff.

And then on to the good stuff, absolutely love your conversion mate! So for advice, I\'m not sure you need any;) But here goes;

The easiest way to get stuff life this to look great is to add a few personalized details. Something like a unique shoulderpad design, or some kind of accessory like you did with the spikes on the helmet. I usually prefer to start with a champion and take whatever I come up with there and build a squad around him.

So with this one you could take the spikes/fur/old style backpacks/tabard as concept ideas for the rest of the squad, maybe even the entire army.

As for making him more wordbearerish I think you did a great job. Perhaps you could try and use their chapter shoulderbadge in some way,has a horned skull infront of flames and of course adding some writing. For variety you could try silver over black for the shoulderpad.

I also rcently just found a very nice one on coolminiornoy, perhaps an idea for your dark apostle;
And some more;

Well hope this helps and keep up the great work!

08-10-2006, 11:24 PM
Alright, so it got posted twice

Must have something to do with our chaotic projects;)

Thanks alot Hephesto! I tought about adding word bearers insignia alot but couldn\'t really find a flat enough surface to paint it on or use a transfer :P

I\'m thinking I will use the fur as a sign of rank for my army, will help my Green Stuff skills as well. Together we shall make the Imperium suffer

21-10-2006, 02:46 AM
Hey there, I have about half my squad done so I\'ve gone and made some quick pictures. You will notice some terrible painting on the horns of the marines in the background. This is because I had had enough painting these four over about four days! (short attention span :P )

anywho here we go!

21-10-2006, 02:55 AM
im nodding my head, IM NOT JOKING

there very cool evil, i could just make a custodian army then webcam battle you:kiss:

29-10-2006, 03:18 AM
It\'s finally done, squad one is complete! Huzzah for Lorgar!
If you have spare time then a comment is more than welcome :P

I know the picture is small but hopefully you get the \'jist\' of them :woohoo:

29-10-2006, 03:26 AM
Archon your painting\'s really neat!

Damn I have an urge to paint my army now!

29-10-2006, 03:28 AM
hey thanks Fridge. I *may* be able to find my close up shots soon if anyone is interested?

P.S Get painting, I find when you have the urge to paint then paint! Even at 11:40pm which I have been catching this bug the last few days :P

29-10-2006, 03:43 AM
i have a urge to paint but i cant be brothere to spary and my mums watching a scary documenter in the living room (thats where i paint)

but i could just make a custodian and battle you

29-10-2006, 03:48 AM
Why not ask if you could get a space bit of wood and a space kitchen tile to safely paint in your own room?

P.S what is this documentary?

29-10-2006, 03:50 AM
what does that ps mean

i could just get a mat and my old plate

thought ive got a small comp table, i dont have space to paint here realy

29-10-2006, 04:02 AM
I forget the phrase and will suddenly wake up tonight I bet saying the answer. PS is when you add something to the end of say, a letter.

painting now would be a bad idea, I\'m spotty enough already, if you count the fact that I\'m half a bottle of wine down and I know better! things that shouldn\'t be done whilst under the infulence
Drive (seriously never ever do this!)
try and discuss particle physics (makes more sense, but you don\'t remember your new theories the next morning!)

on a brighter and on topic note, thats a tidy looking squad, Not the worlds greatest WB fan, but I\'m a true Khorne Adherent when I\'m not furthering the Greater Good. Looking forward to seeing more of these guys soon!

I know the picture is small but hopefully you get the \'jist\' of them :woohoo:

Yep, I get the \'jist\'!... They look pretty cool! It would be a pleaure to anihilate them with my UMs... ;)

It\'s good to see people finishing stuff... It takes so much time to paint (when you\'re as slow as me!)... Sometimes I despair that I\'ll never get around to finishing that unit, vehicle etc.... So to see someone else managing gives me hope! Especially when they do such a good job!!

Keep it up! Show us more when done...

yeah I get a real sense of achievement by finishing a squad. Usually I have to paint a different unit type after 1 troop or I get bored with the scheme :P

29-10-2006, 05:02 PM
Good stuff. They look great altogether in a squad ;)

29-10-2006, 06:16 PM
Looking great there archon! Keep posting this stuff, it great work. And it also keeps me motivated to work on my word bearers. ;)
