View Full Version : Faileas and the ‘The Auld Alliance' or ’Ulthandanol’s Vengeance’

Army name ‘The Auld Alliance’ …’Ulthandanol’s Vengeance’

Thought it was time I gave a bit of a update *smiles*

There are several reasons why I picked Wood Elves for this tale, I’ve been a fan of them since I first read about them in a white dwarf battle verse Chaos Dwarfs many many moons ago, and I love the models that are available for them. However the main reason I wanted to get some wood elves was as an ally force for my beloved Bretonnians, I had planned to get an elite raiding/ally force of wood elves to use along side my Bretonnians and this tale was the perfect chance to create my army. I want to theme my army as a very specialist raiding force…I also wanted it to be infantry based (seeing as I have plenty of the best cav in the game with my Bretonnians) and without any Treekin type units.

I’ve even thought of a bit of fluff based around my general ‘Ulthandanol’ and why he is aiding the Bretonnians and how he came about.

Before the tale I originally planned for the force to be just 1k in points, however the tale has fuelled my passion and imagination and I’m now thinking of a 1.5k force or maybe even 2k. I have a nice conversion idea I want to do, I’d like to convert a unit of stag riders (lead by a character on a great stag possibly), I’d use the rules for either glade riders or wild riders with the exception of the stags gaining a +1 impact hit for maybe 2pnts a model!

My idea of the 500pnt list was as follows

Nobel, Light armour and additional hand weapon
Hunter’s talon and Pageant of Shrikes

Glade Guard x 10 (Standard and Champ)

Glade Guard Scouts x 7 (Musician and Champ)

Wardancers x 5 (Champ)

Total 498

I fought 2 battle today (using my Brets and Dogs of war as proxy) with this list and won them both (verse vamps and Chaos), I had planned to use my Hero to snipe the vamp/hero’s and the plan worked perfectly (with a little miscast help!) The wardancers also worked very well. In all I was happy with how my list worked. Esp since I had never used Wood Elves before.

seemed to work well, its real hard making a 500pt list that can work effectivley, and i think shooting is more important in such lowersized gfames, i shall watch to see how htese tree huggers progress :)

18-02-2010, 10:46 PM
I’ve adapted my original 1000pnt list to the tales required 1500pnt one and I must admit I like the 1.5k one more, in fact this list is going to roughly be my target for the end of the tale…..unless I decide to up it again *grins*

I’ve tried to keep it as similar to the 500pnt one, like the army has been growing, rather than making a complete new list.

So in keeping with the last list and my raiding theme here is 1500pnts of Elfish goodness:

As the 500pnt list with the following exceptions:
+ 1 Glade guard
+ Musician in the Glade guard
- The Hunters Talon
+ Waywatcher Kindred

New list:
Spell singer lvl 2 , Deepwood sphere ,dispel scroll

Noble on Great Stag, Wild Rider Kindred,

3 x Warhawk riders + champion

+5 Wardancers (=10 inc the original 5)

5 x Stag riders (Wild Riders Proxy) (full command)
176 pnts (inc additional +2 for the stag rule)
166 pnts (without rule)

9 x waywatchers + champion

Total 1500 or 1490

Please remember I designed the army for the joy of painting the models and a theme, I know this won’t be the ‘best list’. But I play for fun mainly. Also If I wasn’t allowed to use my special stag rule I’d be tempted to add a magic item instead of the extra glade guard.

Also here is a wee sneak peek at Ulthandanol, He’s not quite finished yet, slight touching up to do and the base and arms to be done. I’ve went for an autumn colour theme…any how CC always welcome.

Im loving the stag idea! Any stat changes because of stags?

18-02-2010, 11:00 PM
I just planed that they got +1 impact hit or +1 strength on the charge, but cost +2 points a model? I thought that seemed fair.

Hmmm, +1 strength would be 2, but impact hits would be more.

18-02-2010, 11:51 PM
Nice work mate, what are you planning for the bases? Leaves and such?

19-02-2010, 12:14 AM
Despite being panzies they still look nice. Gotta be good at something eh? :p

Looking good so far Faileas, leaves would be a really cool base if done right.

19-02-2010, 06:24 AM
Your lords looking god mate, very autumnal. I'd try finding some of those etched brass leaves for the bases of you stuff, it'll keep with the autumn theme what with them fallin from trees and such.

EDIT- I've just read what Aeth had put in LoganVivisected's log and it reminded me (I say reminded, he blatantly wrote) where they come from.

Just using them as proxy for Wild Riders seems fairer....

very very pretty for a tree hugging elf dude, really like him!!

19-02-2010, 11:02 PM
Ok here is my hero choice all painted up for the first months target, only got to write my 2250 pnt list now, which shouldn't take long as its going to be a lord and some eternal guard on top of the 1500 list *grins*

I didn't use leaves as the base, I thought it make it too crowded, instead I tried to make to flock look like a forest floor.

Just the lord and guard? I smell a dragon! Or Orion...

Nice model man! Looks like a month is far too much time for just 1 hero and lists :D

Looking very good Faileas. REP boost for you.

No, no it isn't. I have to get 5 CoK, 5 executioners, Malus, 20 corsairs and a Hydra built for a campaign. 1 target model for this month is just right

As for the model he is excellent, the colour choice on the quiver is spot on.

20-02-2010, 08:11 AM
Very very Impressive sir, I really like what you've done with this. Going for the autumn colours makes it look very different.
Have a cookie on me!

20-02-2010, 10:39 AM
Thanks all for the comments and REP

Aye Warsmith 1 Hero was a nice goal, gave me chance to spend a little while on him and like Aeth i've got loads of other stuff to be doing *laughs*...next up is my grail reliquae, hopefully have that done for the end of the first month in march and so I have 3 weeks to paint the next target.

20-02-2010, 10:48 AM
ahh get on dude! looing forward to seeing that thingy :)

21-02-2010, 11:17 AM
To finish off this months mission here is my 2250 list:

Its as the 1500k list with the following addition/changes:

Upgrade to a lord, additional points for waywatcher kindred, Hail of doom arrows, Moonstone of Hidden ways.

Stagrider Hero
+30 pnts for Spear of Twilight

New Hero
Light armour, Great weapon
Annoyance of Netlings
Helm of Hunt

2 x 15 units of Eternal Guard with full command

Wardancers are now spilt into two groups of 8 with full command

+25 warbanner

Great eagle

Total 2215

If I was using Stagrider special rule I’d include +1 to that unit – totalling 2243
If not I’d add +2 glade guard and give Ulthandanol a biting blade – totalling 2249

The Wood Elves are also allowed to place one 6’ forest before deployment, so I decided to have a try and make a small piece of terrain for this. I’m quite happy with the result, Just a bit of card, A stone from the garden and some flock and I have a nice enough base. The trees are mounted on bases that slot into holes cut into the card.

Looking good young man, I like your copse.

Quick update on this months work in progress,

My target for this month is to paint 5 scouts (maybe more), and at least 10 glade guard (my 2 core).

I've started with the scouts and also have a few ideas to use up some of the extra parts on the spures (such as them poking out of piles of leaves) or those drop down trap things like in robin hood! Still trying to figure how the best way to go about it will be, and will need a few practice runs with my clay to get my pile of leaves looking right!

So far i've nearly painted up 3 scouts, I'm testing a idea I had for them (placing some flock on the cloaks, to make it look like the ground they are standing in)

Here is the first two testers, Ive only just glued them so the flock is still wet ect, and they are no where near finished hense WIP *winks*......I'm unsure if I like the flock or not, My aim was a light scattering, but well the one on the left is a bit flock heavy (easy sorted with a light brushing), but he looks better at eye level! Also I spent abit of time on these blending the capes and it seems a waste to cover it!. I think I will glue the other without a flock cape and use that for my final judgement.

The bases will be tidied up so ignore them *grins*
More than happy with anyone to suggest some ideas or methods to get my desired end result!

P.S also know now that I should place the capes on last when gluing!

Do you not find with the WE's that the hooded heads seem to have a ridiculously small neck area to connect to the torso? Whilst building was no bother I was unsure if it was right or even natural looking...

by the way, i have a trading request. Would you have 4 spare glade guard models with hooded heads? I can send you all the "leafy" cloaks from my sprues, any sprites or banners etc you need...

14-03-2010, 10:08 PM
Indeed, even worse is the the neck area on the torso, its far too forward.

As for the trade, sadly you only get 16 models in the pack and I need them all. Though I would have some spare heads if you needed them.

I like the leaves on the cloaks ! Very cool idea there !

15-03-2010, 12:43 AM
Agreed the leaves look cool.

21-03-2010, 03:10 PM
The first installment to this months challenge 5 scouts:

I've done 4 'normal' ones and converted some of the bits to make a 5th, This will allow me to make much more use of the box. To begin with I've tried the emerging form a pile of leafs look, and considering i knocked it up in a few minutes (it was only going to be a 'tester'),I'm pretty happy with it and think I will do a couple of more similar ones. Next up I think I will try the robin hood idea, ive had a look at the bits and think it should be possible with some clay and extra bits.

I could have spent a slightly longer time touching up the paint job on these, but I think they look fine and I'm happy with there look.

I also did a slight conversion on the musician, (cutting and gluing)

Anyhow enjoy and C&C always welcome.

So next up is 10 normal glade guard. I may also do some more scouts and a few additional GG models and time permitting.

I've also been working on a bit of a scenario for myself, Aeth and Tall to play as a one off game using our armies. Hoping to test it out with my greenskins, and Aeth and Tall using other armies, if its fun and good, we can then use our lovely painted Tale of gamers armies (will need around 1k - 1.5k) and I will make it into a battle report for the thread or such?

21-03-2010, 03:31 PM
They're looking sweet, I wasn't to sure about the flock on the cloaks when you mentioned it but you've pulled it off really well. They look good in the last picture, as if emerging from the shadows.

21-03-2010, 10:58 PM
Looking dandy, though I think I need to see the half burried dude in the flesh before I decide on him.

23-03-2010, 12:40 PM
i like the flock, makes them look like they have just jumped out of a pile of leaves for an ambush, excellent work buddy!

23-03-2010, 09:09 PM
Awesome stuff again :) Maybe use some of the "foliage" bits from the wood elf sprue too, just to make them even more "blended in" with their surroundings.

23-03-2010, 10:50 PM
Thats a good Idea Alex, I may look into adding them *nod nod*

07-04-2010, 10:04 PM
Quick update before the deadline tomorrow, my unit of 10 gladeguards (inc champ and musician) are more or less complete....More = they are good enough to pass the tale points thing (3 colours)....less = they are no where near done by my normal standards (their is paint overlap/spillage, and very little in highlighting, undercoat showing through).

However I will post the pics of them tomorrow along with my monthly reflex.

07-04-2010, 10:19 PM
Oh crap, the deadline is tomorrow? Painting spree!!!

22-04-2010, 10:14 PM
Quick mid month (sort off) update, just putting the final couple of finishing touches to my hero choice for this month.....i've tried to tie in with the red/yellow autumn theme, also have sort of went for a silver birch vibe with the vines around her dress.....Overall i'm actually quite happy with her, Even the green hornet type thing in her eyes!

22-04-2010, 10:22 PM
Looking good mate, I like the muscle tone. I'd like to see a close up of the face but I'm really impressed so far.

23-04-2010, 12:15 AM
Good call on the green hornet, now you need to model Kato :)

08-05-2010, 10:25 PM
Next up 3 warhawks, I really enjoyed painting these, I was very happy with the hawks, that was untill I tried to glue them together and they fell apart stripping some of the paint with em.....it was annoying as well you can guess! The riders I know need quite a bit more work however they are tabletop ready I think.

I did the new style warhawk in that of a peregrine falcon and the other older styles in that of the female sparrowhawk (also looks a lot like a buzzard).

Sorry that one is laid down, but it was one of the gluing issues (its was a originally on a nice bit off wood/tree, however i going to have to pin and green stuff if I want it to stick!). The others are more wobbly than your first bike ride!

08-05-2010, 10:34 PM
Nice, and it is as you say, the riders could use more work (eyes to start :P). The first one looks like it could use a highlight dry brushed onto it's wings, but other than that, I'd say they look quite nice. (Better than mine, who still look very metal.)

Captain Castus
08-05-2010, 10:34 PM
I've got some of these unpainted... I went to the trouble of pinning the wings... That worked well... ;)

Nice work BTW!

08-05-2010, 11:38 PM
The birds are looking grand, should be cookie time when they are finished.

09-05-2010, 03:25 AM
Coming along quite nicely. The color scheme of the Elves looks wonderful (best shown by the guy not using a seatbelt! :p)

13-06-2010, 08:42 PM
First of a my waywatchers.......overall im quite happy with em....apart from one eye that wend a bit squigy (twice)!

13-06-2010, 08:48 PM
I can't see it. All I see is 3 trees... Great job man!

14-06-2010, 02:12 PM
Looks really really good young sir, I'm mightly impressed.

14-06-2010, 11:16 PM
I really like the leaves on the cloak, nice work squire.

14-06-2010, 11:42 PM
Good stuff ! I like your "forest floor" bases on these elves of yours :)

15-06-2010, 04:30 PM
nods, we approve. again you should be doing high elves, but if you want to hug trees, go for it ;) at least he will look awsome whilst doing so

10-07-2010, 03:59 AM
Super cool!
