Ladies and Gentlemen,
you lott showed interest in taking part in (another) arena modeling duel. You request and we play! I think another free for all will work out just fine. So I'm going to challenge the first nine brave, yet foolish souls who signs up...come get some ;)
Here are the terms (special thanks to good old Kellen for these):
1. The challenge is to paint one leader unit. For 40K this would mean a HQ figure, HQ squad member (chapter champion, incubi etc) or officer-type mini (veteran sergeant, junior officer, exarch etc). For WHFB you have the choice of a Lord, a Hero or a command group character (champion, music or standard bearer). The added flexibility will make it easier for everybody to find something to tie in with an excisting project, no excuses left gentlemen!
2. One picture of the model unprimed or primed is required.
3. Three 'in progress' shots are required with a short line or two explaining something you have done to the model. Highlighhting, shading, drybrush... you get the idea.
4. 1 - 4 completed shots of you model. If the thread gets too big I will move them to another with just the completed models for judging.
5. A poll will decide who 'Rumbles!' (The winner!) and who 'Stumbles!' (The losers).
6. Sing up is from now until next week friday, Januari 15th, but only the first nine members to sign up will be in this. This way everybody taking part in part one will also be able to join in on the fun.
7. The Duel is from Januari 16th through January 31rd. Monday Februari 1st I will post the poll for voting over a seven day period, while we get started on the next round!
8. Heckling in the form of pictures or the written word is almost manditory. (Almost!)
9. Despite rumors to the contrary, the corner still belongs to Captain Kellen.

Well then! Here's my entry:
http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Librarian/01_09_10.jpg
And his base:
http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Librarian/Base.jpg
Yea yea, I figured it be ok to start on the base before we "actually started" here :-P
Anyway, a quick run down on how the base was done:
There are two different flooring materials here. One is plastruct sheets with diamond plating, the other is cheep window screen. I used a piece of L shaped plastruct to create the curb between the two, and I cut an I shaped plastruct in half to create the curb between the two pieces of diamond plate. The shell casings were made of plastruct tube, and an 1/8 " hole punch. I then drilled a small hole into the rear of the shell to indicate where the primer would go. The rocks are just a mix of two different sized ballast.
All of this was primed black, then dry brushed with bolt gun and chain mail. The curbs were done with a series of mixtures between black and codex grey (keeping it very dark). The red on the shell casings is another very dark series of mixtures. It starts with black and moves up toward Scab Red. I don't think I ever used pure scab red on it. Finally, the rocks were painted white, then brushed bleached bone, then washed with solid devlin mud.
The grasses are the last thing I applied, and they are a mixture of two different colors (wheat and green grass) from woodland scenics. I snipped them to the right length with scissors, and dipped the end into a bit of PVA glue. Then stuck it to the base, and held it in place for a minute or two until it had hardened.
I'll probably add some more devlin mud to create some rust effects later, and it still needs a clear coat.
Cheers!
Well here's what I'm throwing into the mix, it's the old Archaon model from way back when. I've had it a while and used it as a lord and exhalted champion in many many games. So I thought it's about time he got a lick of paint, and the challenge seemed like a good excuse to do so.

he was base coated codex grey followed by fortress grey leaving a bit of codex grey showing round the edges .
the next coat of paint was 50/50 fortress grey skull white again leaving a bit of the straight fortress grey showing.
this 50/50 mix was blended up with skull white near the edges.all the parts that are going to be metallic or green where
base coated in black...

CC that is a blinding model and there was me thinking i would keep it simple...
anyway this is my next in progress shot ,the chest and shoulder winged skull's where painted skull white on the raised areas and then blood red with a final highlight of blazing orange.
bronzed flesh was added to the face then brown ink ,bronzed flesh was then applied over this leaving some of the ink showing which was then mixed with bleached bone for the highlights...

And lo... Verily did the smurfification commence...
http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a235/davidcutter/Ultramarines/Champion2.jpg
This stage exemplifies my technique of using a dark 'underlayer' to the base colour... It looks pretty dingy at the moment I know... But this is exactly how dark Calgar started out... The advantage of this is that you get better coverage with the base colour than going directly over black... And you also get an 'automatic' extreme shadow in the recesses...
For this mini the 'underlayers' are:
- Necron Abyss for the blue
- Scorched brown for the gold and red (which also helps to bring these different colour area 'together')
- Graveyard earth for the 'scrollwork'
- Codex grey for the white bits
- And Boltgun/Black mis for the metal bits
Very quick... And worth doing IMO... Just remember to thin your paint!!
Haven't decided whether to do the laurels green or not yet... I'm toying with the idea of white or silver... What do you think?

http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af49/tallpaulr/WIP/P17-01-10_1609.jpg
The red was done with a basecoat of Mechrite Red, highlighted with Red Gore then washed with Devlen Mud and Baal Red.
The bronze bits were done with a 2:1 mix of Dwarf Bronze, Tin Bitz, then a Devlen wash and highlighted at 3:1 Dwarf Bronze, Tin Bitz.
Well I'd best get some actual "work" done seeing as it's nearly home time.

The reds are all one color mixed with black. It's Scab Red just shaded with black.
Blues are very similar, started with Regal and Black, and moved through Enchanted.
Working on parchment and cloth at the moment. I started with white base coat (because it was primmed black), and then did a thin bestial brown and washed it with devlin mud. The current color is bestial brown and bleached bone. A coat of bleached bone and white/bleached bone will finish it up.

Sorry, missed this question earlier. I assume you are referring to the cloth/cloak/scripts?
The cloth and the paper are the same exact thing. Under coat white (because of black primmer), base coat with bestial brown wash (not toooo thin). Pure Devlin Mud. 1st highlight is 50/50 bestial/bleached bone, next a little more bleached bone, then solid bleached bone. After that you start mixing white with bleached bone till you have a nice off white (2-3 layers).
Scripts are just black paint on a brush that I twirled to a fine point.
The cloak.... I did the black outline of the trim first, just to get an idea of where I was going. Then I filled it in with Red Gore, and highlighted up (around 4 layers) to blood red. Then I added the inquisitorial I.
Cheers!

Bit torn myself, there's no way I can finish the throne dude in time. So I'm looking for something else and my eye has fallen on an entry in the Witch Hunter codex - a henchmen retinue. There's just a ton of different cool characters I can make based on those describtions, not even to mention the ton of cool minis I could use for it.
Now the challenge is settling on a mini, right now I'm really torn between a close combat warrior or a normal, ranged one. Both are semi-build and pics will come tomorrow, so hopefully I'll be able to make things a tad clearer than. Both are mostly non-GW bits and sculpts, about time I gave some other minis a go again right ;)
On a happy sidenote, I'll still be able to use throne dude for the 'unsung heroes' contest!

My color scheme? Green! This is an improvement over my original color scheme from when I started Chaos, over ten years ago. Originally it was done with a dry brush of dark angels, and now it is a dark angels base, with some snot green blending. This is basically to show myself how much I've improved. It's not really to show off, but to do something that I know I can do better then the first time I did it. Is there a specific Legion or what not? Probably somewhere. But I don't really care. This is for fun and improvement.

Awesome Laz, both the mandatory, wacky picture and the actual mini! Excellent job on the mini so far, really like the blending and brighter highlights on the green armour.

Hmm, I just realized with my last post that I already did 3 WIP pics, which is what is required by the rules. Is that a minimum requirement, or a maximum?

Minimum.
I think.

If I remember what I was thinking at the time I wrote the terms... minimum...
Part of this is to help others who happen to come accross the duel. I have personal hopes these wanderers might gleen something they had not thought of yet wehn it comes to painting.

Finally settled on a mini, a veteran serving in an Inquisitor's retinue:
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f105/hephesto555666/a1.jpg
For those wondering what in the name of the Emperor her is made of, well the body is one of the new System Troopers from Pig Iron and the helmet is a spare Elysian rebreather I happen to come across.
Though certainly not a traditional design I do kind of feel he has an Adeptus Arbites feel about him. Not really in the riot police sense, but there is a certain police-like vibe to him. Painting will begin tuesday and should be done by about friday, giving me just enough time to finish that last part of this month's vow - my FW Trygon.

Not a 100% sure yet, but probably something along the lines of the Arbites colourscheme:

So white/beige/grey undersuit, black armour with blue-ish highlights, red markings on the armour and probably blue reflective glasses.

Well, I've finished. Based it too. I've tried a bunch of old tried and true tricks and also some new stuff. The old dry brush is same as always, same with overbrushing. However, blending is starting to work out nicely. Using the Sepia wash to make gold out of mithral silver still leaves something to be desired, not sure how well that worked out, some of it is really good, others not so much. I tried ChrisSpaceWolves' bone recipe, and that worked out so-so. I'm not used to using watered down paint, and I think I over watered it. It didn't come out very well at all. I also tried some free hand flames, which were HORRIBLE, so they were deleted. Overall, I'm really impressed with myself for this. It shows alot of improvement over how it was first painted, which was just dark angels green with some brazen brass. No advanced techniques or layering, just coloring in the lines.

Almost enough to make me want to start Chaos again, however, they've been good models to give to people who want to give a crack at the hobby. So it would cost a bit more then I would want to spend to get it back up to fighting strength. So I've proven to myself that I've really improved in the decade that I've been actually pretty into the hobby. Even if I 'stumble', I still win.

@ Laz:
Ah yes, the eternal lure of Chaos! Really nice paintjob and scheme you have there Laz, the metallics in particular look great. Nice depth and contrast to the green armour. The only thing I'd really suggest is giving the yellow sections a light wash of brown ink, this will instantly give it a ton of extra depth. That will bring it up to par with the rest of this excellent mini!
I have a tiny update myself, complete with lousy pics. Nothing major yet, just the suit worn underneath the carapace armour and leather strapping/pouches:
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f105/hephesto555666/i1-1.jpg
A quick overview of how each segment was done, even if not really visible in the pic.
Undersuit
- chaos black undercoat followed by a basecoat of fortress grey
- a very thin wash of brown ink was then applied, just thin enough to bring our the folds, nothing more
- 5-6 subsequent highlight/blend layers followed of fortres grey / skull white, each layer containing a tad more skull white
Leathers:
- started from a chaos black undercoat, followed by a scorched brown basecoat
- 3-4 highlight layers of scorched brown / graveyard earth were added
- this can look rather abrupt, though after applying a later wash of ink things will come together quite nicely
- before this wash I did apply some extreme highlight (most on the sharp edged) of bleached bone though

Another mini update, but again some poor pics. Blame the 'artist', not the equipment right ;)
Sadly the depth of the armored plates is utterly invisible in this pic, in actually has a bit of a smokey effect that gives it more the feel on a kind of ceramic plating. Still miles away from finishing, undecided on the colour of the gun and with a billion little mistakes to correct. Not even to mention the reds, all metallics and the base, but here's where mister tough guy stands right now:
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f105/hephesto555666/wh2.jpg
And I found a second head, so he'll eventually be accompagnied by his more active brother:
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f105/hephesto555666/wh1.jpg
Who knows, I may even turn them into a mini diorama ;)
Though, as said, still tons of work left I do rather like the quite sinister, disciplined and somewhat arbitesesque-vibe of this guy. Shame FW only sells Elysian respirator helmets seperately, otherwise I'd be tempted to do some more. But buying sets just to get some head variety would be too insane. Yes, even for me!
But enough about my silly mini, how is everybody else getting along?

Update on the Librarian!
I've base coated all of the areas to be gold with Tin Bitz, and did the cover/bindings of the books.
http://arolkay.com/SiteImage/Deathwatch/Librarian/01_28_10a.jpg
You can see here how I want the gold to come out. The head of the staff is completed, and was painted using solid paints w/ 50/50 mixes in between. Tin Bitz, Dwarf Bronze, Burnished GOld, Shining Gold, Chainmail. I did not use a solid coat of Chainmail, but insted stopped at the 50/59 mix of Shining gold and Chainmail. The effect was finished off with a very thin coat of devlin mud.

And! I still havn't decided what chapter he should be from... But this book will have to have some icon of his origonal chapter on it.

I'll only post two here, check here (http://astronomican.com/forums/showthread.php?p=281839#post281839) for the full pics.
Well, considering I've got 2 more hours today and about 8 tomorrow I'm giving it a good old try to get mine finshed, no promises though.
Here's the steed pretty much done, I've just got the base to finish off.
http://i992.photobucket.com/albums/af49/tallpaulr/Warriors%20of%20Chaos/P30-01-10_1420.jpg
As for what I've done, the horses body was basecoated in Charadon Granite, washed in Badab black then given some highlights with a50/50 mix of Granite and Astro grey.
It's going to be a rush job now so I'm not holding much chance of it being a fantastic job, but so long as it's finihed I'm not fussed.
@Pherion, superb job as usual, really liking him.
@Skringly, I love your pasty little Skink, unusual skin tone, but it works really well.
Anyway, I can't spend all day on here I've paint to slap on metal.
See ya,

Excellent stuff all round lads! I have a couple of quick and humble suggestions ;)
@ - Pherion - just beautiful, so much detail and still nothing clashes with eachother. I do feel that the blue could do with an extra highlight, in comparisson with the rest it just seems to have a tad less depth.
@ - Skringly - looks like a very cool mini to paint, especially when you take the challenging road of light colours! A quick idea, have you considered painting the recessed areas of his colour something different than gold? Even silver or perhaps something blue-ish would add a ton of extra contrast on the main body area.
@ - Tall - impressive edge work using gold, not an easy task! Two small things stand out though, the eye seems to be very bright and shiny (probably the pic though). And the horns are very brownish, I think that making them a tad lighter will add some contrast on the head.

Shouldn't be too hard lol. He is pretty much done already (undercoated black for a black model, just highlighting, the gun, the face, and the loincloth to do ;))
Well this'll be the third and final mandatory update.

Well I'm off to finish him off (hopefully)
Thankyou for listening.

Bad news. I do not believe in the time left, I shall be able to complete the Priest. So I must move on to a model where I stand to make more of a chance on finishing by that deadline today. Even worse I'm going to see Avatar in 3D later today and that will take up all time as it ends close to midnight. I'm leaving for it a 8, so I have less than 6 hours to piant this:
