Well, a while ago I sold my Imperial Fleet of Death to raise some funds for various things... But the warp is calling me, even now.

Basically, I wanna start up playing again... But I don't know which fleet to go with.

I was thinking Space Marines, mainly because I like the idea of a rather small, but incredibly powerful fleet... And the fact that the FW Grey Knight Strike Cruisers are about half the price of the GW ones. And nice and easy to paint, too. And the FW Gladius and Hunter classes are so much nicer than the GW ones...

Anyone else play, or play against a Space Marine fleet?

Cheers,
Rider

I have a Chaos Fleet and an Imperial Fleet, but only one Space Marine (Dark Angels) Strike Cruiser - haven't played in ages though, but you're right - the Warp does call to you......

Never quite sat right with me the way the Ordnance rules work though - there's just no point in including Fighters in waves of attack craft, as they are no more survivable than Bombers, except for special Fighters like Eldar and Marines.

I bought a large imperial fleet sometime ago, including a battle barge and strike cruiser for those moments when i feel like adding some serious fluff...Alas i got the fleet just after GW Australia decided to stop surrporting it all together, so i never did play a game.....i cant bare to part with it though, i want to learn and they very nice models...

I've got several fleets, one of which is a marine fleet. I find they aren't as good at fleet engagemenets as you'd expect them to be, lacking the range of some Chaos ships, and the sheer firepower of an Imperial fleet (Mainly due to greater numbers). They do excel at the Planetary assault scenario and in bording actions (As you'd expect), but bording actions aren't as good as bombing runs for actually destroying capital ships - so bare in mind that thunderhawks aren't bombers.

Saying that, there are few things that put fear into your oponent quite like a Battlebarge!

I use fighters to attack torpedoes and enemy fighters and bombers :p I find them highly useful for that particular task. In fact, if I know I'm going up against torpedoes and/or enemy Ultralight craft (Ultralight as in compared to the ships they come from :p) I'll take at least one quarter of my launch bay space as fighters :p

EDIT: I also own about 2000 points of Orks and Eldar, about 1000 of Chaos, and about 4000 or so of Imperials :p

My biggest problem, looking at the SMarine fleet, is the lack of variety in their craft. They have 6 escort types (including the lovely Nova FF, which is by far my fave, because LANCES EVERYWHERE!). Then you've got exactly 2 choices for Capital ships, and those choices are a 425-point Barge and a 145-point Strike Cruiser. If you use the Venerable Battle Barge from the Marines PDF it gets slightly better, and the Dominion Fleet lets you nake Imp Navy reserves, but it's just not quite the same.
