View Full Version : Another Mordheim question

Ok. After hanging about the threads talking about Mordheim, I thought it looks cool. But, I haven't the foggiest whats it's about (Laz explained the basics) or how to play it.

But, I might start (It's cheap I heard for a Warband) but no one near me (As far as I know anyway) plays it.
So would it be worthwhile?

Faileas
10-08-2009, 05:25 PM
It be worth it, if you have some friends (or even one) that you can get into it? The rules are free after all and Laz has a great guide on how to make a cheap warband, however its upto you how much you go into it! also building stuff for it is fun (except when it won't stick *rants*)

I like it, cause it combines RP elements with WFB, (nothing to stop you from creating some different scenario's around the rules?)

But if your never going to get a game....then I'm unsure, depends on how much pleasure you'd get from creating a warband....

dont know if you ever played confrontation, but it had an expansion called dogs of war, this is like that, where you can build a war band, get to know them,,with personal names,:), then as they fight you can up their stats after a battle, it really good as you get a closeness with you group, even one other will make it worthwhile, im sure when you start it you will love it.

Inquisitor023
10-08-2009, 05:31 PM
It sounds good. Except for Terrain Building ((BTW Darknight? That village terrain? Frickin' epic.)) that would be hard for me.

What races are there for Warbands, cause I'm tempted and if it's not too expensive, I'll try to tempt my friends too. Failing that, every once and again, I'll gp to America to play you guys!

hmm, its the old thing of whatever you like best, the unoficial ones have been playtested very well so they are really no differnt, each warband has its own quirks, so check them out and make sure ones you pick/shortlist, have some of what you like, i have possessed and tomb kings, with a starting of vampires, kay has witch hunters and a choasy type one in progress, dont forget a great thing with them is you dont have to have the proper minis if you dont like them or are not available go to gw fantasy section of your choice and choose them, just remember sizes!!

Actually, I looked at Witch Hunters. They just look so cool.... A Cap, Warrior Priest and warhounds. Some Witch Hunters. Love it.

I'll just have to have a deeper look at prayers, rules etc. but so far, I'm sold. Small RP games and Fantasy. Seems we may soon have another Mordheim player joining...

Lol. Is there a link to rules anywhere or are they on this site?

And for a WH Warband, would Defence (Loads of Zealots with ranged weapons) or Offence (Lots of Warhound and other non daaka things) work best for a new guy?

all the rules are free to download on gw site, go to specialist games tab/mord resources.
plus you can download others on that other site, i would just go with the starter box, (and one for a freind, diff of course)
and play like that for a while till you decide on your playstyle

If you're into conversions Mordheim has lots of oppertunites to let you're imagination run free. And as you're never going to have more than 20 models in a warband it's got to be the cheapest of GWs game systems by a long shot (3/4 of mine is coming from one 18 Night Runner box). Most of the human warbands can be put together using an Empire Milita box.

Seriously though, one box=one Warband?

Sweet...

You won't get everything in one box if you fancy Witch Hunters (no hounds) but there are enough interesting bits on the sprues to get you well on the way. If you take mine for example the only things I wouldn't be able to get for my Skaven from that 1 box are the Giant Rats, Wizard and Rat Ogre (though I'm going to get my assasin from one of the skaven blister packs as I want him to really stand out)

I agree the witch hunters look grand, I was tempted by them or the sisters of sigmar (warrior nuns!).

But as DN says the choice is massive *nod nod*

also did you check out Laz's thread for pricing up the different bands?

Yep! Soon as I get some money, I shall join the hallowed halls.

But, Warbands. How customisable are they? I mean, paint schemes and whos in it but what else? Could you nam them and all? Write Fluff of who they are?

For example. a Ordo of the Witch Hunters tasked with keeping Chaos from affecting settlements. Kinda like peace keepers. Could you do that?

Writting fluff is a big part of Mordheim, its partially a role playing game. As you progress your characters gain experience and fame, you then spend the EXP points that you earn in improving your character like you would playing D&D or a videogame like Fable.

LAZtheinfamous

To be honest, I'm sorry I missed this thread. As for fluff, it doesn't matter. Each warband is indivual. They could be made up of dudes who had no other choice, like penal legionaires. Or treasure hunters, or a decommissioned military unit.

As for starting warbands, I suggest sticking with the ones from the mainbook. Especially the human mercanaries are really good for beginning players, they are well balanced, and very cheap. Just as a tip, crossbows rule the streets.

As for terrain, while Darknight has gone enviablly whole hog, you don't necessary need alot of cool stuff. Here's what me and the kids did a bit back when we went away for the weekend.

Ah, and also as a side note, I would love to mention that Mordheim is an excellent way to begin a Fantasy army. With the bits you pick up for some of the warbands, you would have an excellent beginning!

Thats me happy then. I like writing fluff. Maybe I'll plan it and grace you all with it while I save up 15 for a Empire Milita box. :D

Actually, on reflection, I couldn't write Fluff. I haven't got two cents to rub together when it comes to WFB.

LAZtheinfamous
10-08-2009, 08:16 PM
Doesn't matter, Mordheim takes place a few hundred years before the current WHFB year. So all the fluff you really need is in the main book. You can always supliment it with other stuff, but its not really necessary. Besides the act of running a campaign will create fluff. After each match is the exploration phase, which is like a fluff generator!

Cool. But, as a starting point for the Warband's founding, I thought of this. Clearly, it's basic but I will expand as I learn. I ask you to help me through suggestions. Here it is:

The Order of Specto is an order of secretive, plain clothes knights, dedicated to Sigmar. They roam the Empire, watching for signs of Chaos and acts with force when it emerges. The high Captain, Castus, answers only to the Emperor in his duties. The Order often makes use of serfs, Empire citizens who want more in life.

Like I said, basic, to say the least. So any ideas?

Ps: Think 40K Inquisition for these guys and gals.

Like that.

Yeah. So? Doesn't matter what game rules they use. If you wanted to do fish men using Possessed rules, I'd be cool with that. Doesn't matter. However, just as a side note, forgo armor! There are so many things that ignore armor that even heavy armor with a shield just isn't worth it!

darknight

right well, good at improvising is well,,,good!lol.
you have the downloads, which will give you some good reading, and ideas, you want to go with witch hunters/knights
witch hunting knights returning from a dark crusade to their home village of mordheim, find it destroyed and in a desperate struggle against good and bad, demons running wild unchecked, they take it upon themselves to band together and rid the town of its demonic presence returning them from whence they came ?

Well. I get up for ten minutes, and what happens, you explode the thread. But the point I was trying to make is that the Fluff and the crunch do not have to go hand in hand. In mordheim, everything is up to you.

Definitly start with your captain. Why is he in Mordheim? Cause everyone else can be recruited onsite (well, technically so can your captain). More the point, why is he recruiting the force that he is. The rest will fall into place. Have you read the rulebook yet? Lots of ideas there. Free download (http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?catId=cat410008&categoryId=1100014&section=&aId=5300009)

I'm with gingusdan on the fluff thing,Ive never been one to tailor things to be the most powerful, but what I like to play. My warband has been based mainly around that, I looked for and chopped chars to suit what I had in mind for my warband.....they may be stupidly underpowered and die all the time.......but well that will just give the rest of you a chance *grins*.

But the main thing everyone is saying is with Mordhiem its upto you *grins*, let you mind wonder It can fit with almost anything....

@DN loving that fluff.....*grins*

Well, Gingusdan, it depends on what type of thing you want to play. Even going with the band of knights thing, i would still play witchhunters. Pick up a single witchhunter as your captain, and then use the Empire Militia as the base for the rest of the warband. Plus you can get cool things like flagellents.

gargh iv decided to wade in here and stuff!

now, ging, as iv told you I live on malone avenue, so question 1: how close is that to you?

also, my housemate and I, and one of our chums, are currently doing a "path to glory" , um, series of games? This is like a Mordheim-but-only-chaos-esque-thing, mainly because the two of them are relatively new to WFB, and they both have chaos armies of their own... im sure the leap to actual mordheim wouldnt be too hard, particularly as they both like RPgames. I could use my Undead chaps, or perhaps create something new.. i dunno.

what im really getting at is that possibly we may start doing some Mordheim round at mine, would you want in?
