View Full Version : mordheim board

22-07-2009, 05:03 PM
ok you all know who you are :)
the board is going to get going soon as i just bought some stuff today, dunno shal i keep the wip here or move it to wip when i start making it?

22-07-2009, 05:08 PM
Both is fine, keeping it here may be the simplest for everybody. So how big will this beauty become and do you have any specific theme yet? Choosing a town area (old market, wyrd stone crater, graveyard, park, old wardens, harbor etc.) can really help you with both building ideas and the end result.

22-07-2009, 05:15 PM
ha ha, cheers heph, well its going to be 4x4, and a town centre/market with sewers and crypts under the houses.
i have already bought some starting materials , board, clay etc, and intend on semi ruins in places with some still intact, a sort of tudor ish looking houses, stone on the first floor, wattle and daub above with expossed timbers, this isnt going to be quick its going to take some time, the board will be about 3" thick, to allow for the sewers/crypts

22-07-2009, 05:27 PM
That sounds really cool, how are you planning to do the sewers and crypt? Are they all going to be small recesses in the face of the board or full layers underneath the main level of houses?

22-07-2009, 05:32 PM
oh im going for the full monty!lol. well thats the idea, the board being 3 inch will allow for 28mm minis under a building cut into the board, obviously the house will be removed then to show the crypts, sewers i think will be cut out but incorporate the crypts like an all in one unit, im just trying to work on scale at the moment to get the houses the right sort of size

22-07-2009, 05:52 PM
Sounds grand, I can't wait to see the WIP (and steal....I mean borrow your ideas)...that and you are aware there is a danger of myself and Aeth turning up warbands in hand at your house!!!

22-07-2009, 05:58 PM
lol, as i said before you are welcome, in fact i think you should do it sometime, marticus is coming up soon so could combine it?

22-07-2009, 07:47 PM
Well the last time we were down there we did decide that moving to exeter would be a grand idea, now we have more excuses other than the sun and the lure of rich farmers daughters ;)

22-07-2009, 10:20 PM
That would be cool *nod nod* could even visit my friend en-route so its not as long a trip! only thing is....we may be talking 5years buy the time Aeth paints a warband *winks at Aeth*....

22-07-2009, 10:42 PM
rich daughters..lol. bring unpainted...leave painted.sorted.have a paint day before evening battle

23-07-2009, 02:33 AM
Ah, how I envy you being so close to darknight with his wonderful boards. But I shall watch this carefully.

23-07-2009, 08:17 AM
why thank you laz, you will just have to get a plane ;)

23-07-2009, 09:23 AM
oky doky guys an gals...im sure we have one or two, here is the first in progress building, bottom section will be stone so lots of clay building to do yet, roof timbers and joists plus tiles as well to go on, but you can see how its going to look, i know from this one its going to take a long while to do this, but i stay up late and got up early to finish this one to this level.
its going to have a wooden floor as well, and a trap dooron the first base, then before going on the board its going on another base to raise it slightly and allow for a broken floor giving way to dirt and rubble, after the stone is on the lower floor, the top section will be stippled to make it look like wattle and daub, as will the rest of the buildings.
pic heavy at first as its the first update :)

23-07-2009, 09:24 AM

23-07-2009, 10:07 AM
dude looking sweet so far! really looking forward to gaming on this bad boy! now as for you two aeth and faileas get on down to the westcountry bey! tis lovely!

23-07-2009, 12:28 PM
That is nice, and I really like the idea with the double foam board for using cracks and such. Nice.

23-07-2009, 01:58 PM
thanks, its also for giving the buildings a true scale of thickness of walls, and when they crumble some sides dont match up.
i am doing all of them to a scale so its quite hard sometimes, but its working :)

23-07-2009, 02:30 PM
I really like the cracked walls, are those ceiling tiles?

23-07-2009, 02:33 PM
cheers, no 3.5 mm foamboard, double so 7mm, then re infoced with the wood

23-07-2009, 02:36 PM

23-07-2009, 02:37 PM
Amazing stuff, makes me want to get back into my beloved Mordheim!

23-07-2009, 02:43 PM
thanks......you better had!

23-07-2009, 02:45 PM
0 gamers here and Mordheim really is a playing game. 40K and WHFB I can just focus on converting and painting, but Mordheim must be played to fully enjoy the depth of its background. In my opinion anyway.

I do have some of the old warbands around, those sisters of Sigmar make for a very nice painting challenge ;)

23-07-2009, 02:50 PM
mmm sisters of sigmar! would have loved a warband o them!!

23-07-2009, 02:52 PM
true, got too many games myself i dont play, they are a bit like 40k witch hunters arent they, did they start the movement ?

23-07-2009, 03:09 PM
no the sisters of sigmar are more a group of warrior nuns, they where the only ones that survied in the city normal after the meteor hit, it avoided and didnt damage their convant. the arch lector decalered them heretics though.. so not so shiny

23-07-2009, 03:11 PM
nuns with guns,,lol. gotta be kinda lucky to mis the "bomb"

23-07-2009, 03:15 PM
nuns with whips and hammers of sigmar :) hard ass lasses they be

23-07-2009, 03:20 PM
hmmm nuns and whips.....mind boggles :)

23-07-2009, 03:27 PM
yeah..... i know :)

23-07-2009, 03:34 PM
Well heph, you're only a short ferry hop from me and Faileas lol.

Nice work DK, looking forward to seeing how the flagstones work out.

23-07-2009, 06:20 PM
DK thats looking awsome, I was going to try my hand this eve at making a ruin that looked something similar to that (In my head, was planning it at work) but now Ive seen yours I may not post it *laughs*.......The amount of detail and effort you put in is staggering buddy

P.S where did you get the foamboard?

23-07-2009, 06:55 PM
thanks very much mate, its not finished yet, so hope itl be ok when done.
whatever you do DONT be put off, go ahead and do it, and if i can help in anyway just ask :)
its nice to know you like it though, its got the first layer of tiles now, and an old fire place and the start of the trap door to lead to the cellar, ill post it later if i can

23-07-2009, 11:31 PM
That's amazing. I''m going to have to go over it detail, but how did you do the big cracks in the sides of the building? They look really natural.

24-07-2009, 08:17 AM
the cracks, i use a very fine craft knife to cut the top of the crack, if going down, at about 45 deg, then more about 60 deg at the bottom, changing as the cracks goes around. hope ya get that, if not ill do another blank piece to show you :)

24-07-2009, 08:37 AM
oky dokly 2 updates today, first wash and texture first section of tiles

theres a sneak peak at the flagstones as well there, more to follow a bit later

24-07-2009, 09:09 AM
Your board is going to be amazing :D

Still haven't told me where you got that foamboard from though *winks*

24-07-2009, 09:22 AM
sorry i forgot all about that......hang on did you ask? i dunno..
just go to a local art shop, its anything from 1.75-3 quid a sheet for a3

24-07-2009, 09:34 AM
Very impressive. On the subject have you seen GW daily update thing?

24-07-2009, 10:13 AM
epic stuff dude... keep up the awsome work!

24-07-2009, 10:41 AM
ok here it is

24-07-2009, 10:41 AM
this is the clay stone suround as well, still drying so cant paint it yet

24-07-2009, 10:43 AM
dude trhats awsome!! well worthy of many a cookie! wont the clay make it fragile though?

24-07-2009, 10:45 AM
Grumble, grumble, grumble..what is it with some people and the insane speed at which they produce stuff ;)

Seriously though, lovely work mate. The clay 'brickwork' and the exposed inner layer really make this piece look fantastic. Reppage time!

24-07-2009, 10:48 AM
thank you all, no the clay is stuck on very well with hot glue, then when painted itl be sealed with clear coat, testors, after a coat of envirotex(which will be my last drop, so im looking at anyone in the usa to send me some more as we cant get it over here, of couse i will pay).
it has taken about 3 days though heph, forsaking all else :)

24-07-2009, 02:03 PM

24-07-2009, 03:55 PM
Wow, you make some awesome terrain pieces DK, Great work.

24-07-2009, 03:57 PM
thanks ossai, glad you like it, the board will now be increased from 4x4 up to a 6x4 to allow for more scenery...and a river...and a cemetry...and..and

24-07-2009, 04:01 PM
Ooh a cemetary. I will be looking foreward to that one (so I can steal it ;)). Could be an objective for my VC army that I am soon to make :D

24-07-2009, 04:04 PM
no worries, yea basic stones above with small mausoleum but large crypt below

24-07-2009, 04:09 PM
just a little update

rubbish in corners

ladder, trap door, and fireplace

24-07-2009, 04:12 PM
are you going to darken the wood floors at all? still quite light for weatherd wood maybe i dunno

24-07-2009, 04:14 PM
yes i am, they are darker than they apear on the pic but not dark enough yet...more tea needed!

24-07-2009, 04:16 PM
looks so good so far, forgot to say that, lovce the little touches of dirt and dust and such like

24-07-2009, 06:51 PM
I demand a flagstone tutorial :)

A graveyard as well now huh? This is starting to sound like mordheim paradise.

24-07-2009, 06:59 PM
Given the tea reference, I'm assuming that you are staining the wood instead of painting it. Nice idea, I think I'll swipe it.

24-07-2009, 08:18 PM
ok ok, let me get ahead a bit more with this then ill do a flagstone/stone tutorial alright? :)
las, yes, all of the woos is painted bar the floor boards, i find it gives them a really good effect, a good strong tea mix, still might take around 5-10 coats, but its so easy to get it to look old and stained, and patchy.
if you wanted newer boards, lacquering afterwards gives it a lovely teak/ light oak effect

24-07-2009, 10:06 PM
That is quite amazing DK and in such a short time, I think this REP is very well deserved and I hope will not be the last for this brilliant project. Keep it up.

25-07-2009, 12:07 AM
Was checking up on some From the Warp blogs and I came across a post that might be of interest of inspiration to you - Link (http://excommunicatetratoris.blogspot.com/2009/07/change-of-pace.html).

25-07-2009, 08:05 AM
thanks starky, cheers heph, the one thing im not happy with so far is the roof shingles, i think they are going to be temporary, till i get something else done, but it helps with perspective of roof heights and where someone could move from,it looks like his a cardboard, might give that a try :)

25-07-2009, 09:08 AM
Thanks heph, that guy has some cool bits.

25-07-2009, 10:03 AM
I love this Thread, full of Mordhiemly goodness....and nw there is even talk of tea in it ........Bliss

Keep up the good work DN *grins*

25-07-2009, 10:05 AM
hey hows ur head ?

25-07-2009, 10:33 AM
Head is fine today....however Don't know about tomorrow though...'ding ding round two'

Had a really cool eve, curry was grand and ale went down nicely

25-07-2009, 03:38 PM
glad you had a good time mate :)

25-07-2009, 08:25 PM
Most likely it is that the shingles aren't overlapping, once you try out overlapping cardboard ones I'm certain you like it a whole lott more!

27-07-2009, 10:46 AM
right the clay is dry on the first one (at last) so while i was waiting i made these, the ruined one is as it is finished, just got to put it on a base and add lods of rubble and broken wood to this one, but as you will see later on i need each one on a base so they can lift of to reveal the undercrypts/sewers of each building.
the one in the background im not sure of, so feedback would be gratefully accepted.
its not finished, still needs one more level and a roof, but it is its size and shape im not too sure of, seemed ok in the drawings i done. shall i leave as is (next level and roof remember, not as is at the moment) or cut into to buildings? i was thinking if it stays as is it would have only light damage.

oh one more thing, shall i leave the ruined building with the floors like that (textured and ruined) or shall i give them all floor boards ?

27-07-2009, 11:25 AM
Looking good, a mix seems most fun to me.

27-07-2009, 11:34 AM
Whoa. Those are some big buildings. Like Taverns, Inns, or the nobles quarters.

27-07-2009, 11:52 AM
thank you, but what about the floors? and you like the big one, its shape and size?

27-07-2009, 12:13 PM
The floors I think its really upto you buddy, both ways look great (however if I had to pick I'd go with the floorboards between floors). As for the House...the top floor window seems large (shape of the house is fine, in fact amazing as always), I was just trying to think what would have a window that large! All I can think off is a shop?.

So when you coming round to my house and building mine hehe

27-07-2009, 12:17 PM
ok floorboards it is...........ah more work, lol.
yes the big window i wasnt sure of..no worries itl now be two small ones.
all the stairs and stuff is going to be made out of wood in this one as well thanks for the input guys :)

27-07-2009, 05:38 PM
Size and shape seem fine to me, maybe a little walled garden in one of the spaces of the T shape lol.

27-07-2009, 05:47 PM
hmm....cheers aeth..
ok here it is with floor boards, it was a pain but i admit it looks better :)

27-07-2009, 05:52 PM
I'm loving the state of your worktable *grins* Hoping that isn't the misses best dinning room one!

looking grand...also your a bleeding machine buddy

27-07-2009, 10:49 PM
Looks like you'll be in need of another trip to maccy d's soon mate :)

28-07-2009, 08:39 AM
woops ........oh no its ok thats just my modelling table lol.
yes i shal be at my stockists today :)

Commissar Yarriman
28-07-2009, 01:48 PM
I think 'Grand Designs' would have a word or two with the Grandness of them buildings..lol....loving the buildings, they already have my mind wondering with inspiration...

I'll keep my eye on this thread for the outcome! rep for now...

29-07-2009, 03:20 PM
ok next update, i have decided rather than paint each one as made ill do them all at the end, then i can batch make some texture paint.
not finished but now its got all its levels, the roof on this one wont need much else as its not going to be too destroyed,
im putting together a flagstone, and roof tutorial as requested, be done tomorrow (hopefully)

29-07-2009, 03:21 PM
oh still got the wood surround and supports yet should be done tomorrow as well :)

29-07-2009, 03:57 PM
*is gobsmacked*! excellent work!

31-07-2009, 12:12 PM
ok, just to show i have not been lazy..
the top right section is higher and is going to be a rock face, the small buildings are bothys, and will be up there and along that side of the board going down, this will add more variety to the board and will be where the sewer is.
what do you think of the new stone face on the big building?

31-07-2009, 12:15 PM
I love the idea with the little shanty town! So simple, yet adds a really nice variation of hieght. Definitly going to have to do something like that!

31-07-2009, 12:50 PM
Good gawd man those are beautiful! REP!

31-07-2009, 01:25 PM
thank you :) whatcha rekon to the stone work, ok or not, or shal i do it like the other house?

31-07-2009, 01:27 PM
Man I'm starting to get really jealous, this is fantastic stuff. Love the new building as well, the little shed additions really take things to the next level! Rep time indeed!

31-07-2009, 01:37 PM
thanks again guys, might have to hold for a month on the board itself, sewers etc, its sooo expensive the blue/pink foam, but the top part will all be done :)

31-07-2009, 05:43 PM
What a load of rubbish...............

I say go with the stonework it looks great, and I'm also loving the Two tiered rock/house thing.

31-07-2009, 06:21 PM
Stick with the rock cladding, it looks ace :)

oh and have a small morcel of rep.

01-08-2009, 09:54 AM
thanks guys, rock cladding it is, much easier than the other anyways :)

01-08-2009, 10:11 AM
little thing i made last night. pics not tooo good, but you can still see whats what i hope, looks real good on the table, few markers as well, this (if you couldnt tell :) ) is the mortuary building which will be surrounded by an old fence and some grave stones..

01-08-2009, 11:19 AM
this is gonna be ace! mmm the chapel of morr! god of the dead

01-08-2009, 12:31 PM
hmm god of the dead...i like that

01-08-2009, 12:33 PM
hang on let me see what i can dig up for ya.... ;)

check it out

01-08-2009, 12:37 PM
great the undead will rise mwahhhaaaa.
could work, a few open graves, funny i was thinking, of doing the mort (get it) mortuary black like marble, with a white/light blue veins, but im not sure if that would fit in with the rest, ya know black marble? or would it look ok and sinister?

01-08-2009, 12:37 PM
would look good i think :) aye i get it dude. hopefully that info should help out a touch

01-08-2009, 10:25 PM
I love the Temple of Morr's Black Guard with their big zweihander swords.

Captain Castus
02-08-2009, 09:40 AM
Haven't looked at this thread for a while...

I must say I'm impressed by the progess!!

REP-worthy... Can't wait to see it finished...

02-08-2009, 10:12 AM
Lovely! Now where did I put that sack of Rep?

02-08-2009, 01:30 PM

02-08-2009, 02:08 PM

02-08-2009, 05:04 PM
And some barrels of Bugmans XXXX :)

02-08-2009, 05:10 PM
poxy manlings would not have bugmans XXXX :o

05-08-2009, 11:52 AM
just when you thought it was safe....
another update, small veranda type thing to the big house and another building, this one has the jog (or used to) as a storage yard/building, steps on the outside.

i have also made some town centre pieces to be put on the board, and a little change to the layout, as it goes it was a single street, but decided when laying out last night, a small village centre would look better on this board, i think it looked cool, ill try and make it up again today, kids permitting, and after the trip to town to pick up some tombys, and a whole load of warriors of chaos!!

05-08-2009, 02:06 PM
By far my favorite building till now, this is going to be one mighty impressive board!

Vulpus Rex
05-08-2009, 02:31 PM
Where do you store all of this fantastic scenery DK. Your house must be overflowing with boards :D

05-08-2009, 05:04 PM
thanks guys, well vp, the infinity stuff is ok in the garage as its pvc board, this stuff however has made a home in the computer/games room/spare room..in one of the cupboards, lets just say its getting cosy in there, lol

05-08-2009, 10:49 PM
I don't know I don't check for one day and two new fully formed building crop up...your a machine DN....also great looking stuff as always. You going to have to visit your stockists again soon?

Also can the top half of the boozer always be removed or will it be glued into place? (if its the latter, how easy is it to move models in the lower section?)

05-08-2009, 10:55 PM
all the buildings have removable layers so you can move around freely and go from level to level, lol, i actually bought a big box yesterday, lol. got lots of goodies from gw today, but ill put a pic up of the board so far soon..

05-08-2009, 10:58 PM
Looking forward to it :D

05-08-2009, 11:00 PM
thanks :) meant to do it today but got back to late, so ill put it up tomorrow........now time for bed yawn...........

06-08-2009, 02:14 PM
here ya go... not done the base and theres another big house to go with a tower and a few more small bothys, done all the gravestones now, they are going on the hill with the tomb/mortuary.
got a town centre and a watering hole which will get a few posts to tie up ya horse..
but you can see its coming on now, as i said earlier all buildings have removable floors, roofing next then the great paint after texturing, i have done one level in the distance on the storage building.

06-08-2009, 02:15 PM
loving it so far dude! cant wait to unleash my ratman horde their.... would be a shame if i used unpainted models dont ya think ;)

06-08-2009, 02:31 PM
That is freaking awesome, even unpainted and just on a random green cloth!

06-08-2009, 02:33 PM
mart, it would be more than a shame, do ya a deal, ill paint the board you paint the rat boys...you fail no play!!!lol.
cheers heph, god how many of you are coming over by plane to play on this :)

06-08-2009, 02:38 PM
Plain...might just have to build myself a longboat and make the long 8 month journey from Skeggi with my old Norse inspired warband :D

06-08-2009, 02:45 PM
ha ha lol, well your always welcome ........................whatever army ya got :)

07-08-2009, 01:46 AM
I may just have to stowaway on an ocean liner to get there to play on that board. Much easier then stowing away on a plane!

07-08-2009, 09:23 PM

10-08-2009, 06:00 PM
right guys just thought you might like to see how the first painting is doing, the inside floor isnt really as bright as that, ceiling light not helping, but the texture is on and i must say looks good, but on the other buildings i will go for a finer base,

10-08-2009, 06:12 PM
glad to see the board is still moving on a rapid pace :D

10-08-2009, 06:25 PM
oh yea itl be finished by next week!!:)

10-08-2009, 06:26 PM
Man, are you and ChrisSpaceWolves the secret identity of the Flash?

10-08-2009, 06:30 PM

im taking my time with this one :)

10-08-2009, 06:46 PM
anyway,im taking my time with this one :)

*Dies of laughter*

10-08-2009, 07:47 PM
I wish I had your motivation for getting things done.

10-08-2009, 10:05 PM
come and stay round here for a week and ill tell ya you will have!!:)

10-08-2009, 11:01 PM
Only if we can take a trip to that ace ice-cream place in Dawlish. Curry ice-cream for the win :)

11-08-2009, 08:39 AM
well im not far from there so ok....are you serious about the curry ice cream....might go today with the nippers and find out!! :)

11-08-2009, 06:08 PM
Aye, there is a place that fronts onto that rectangular park near the seafront. Has all kind of weird homemade flavours.

18-08-2009, 01:07 PM
right guys, been a bit lax with the updates recently, mainly because of starting a tomb kings ans chaos warriors armys for fantasy, (as you might have gathered :) )
the store house is now done bar the stone work on the ground floor, well they all need that but its easier for us to do that last as its clay (well some of it )

the tavern has been done as well now, again apart from the stonework, it also has tables inside.

these are my tiles, really chuffed with them they take some time to do but i think they look good.

18-08-2009, 01:09 PM
tiles look awasome dude!! really really good stuff :)

18-08-2009, 01:12 PM
The tiles look ace mate, I'd stick with those!

18-08-2009, 01:18 PM
thank you guys, yea im rather stocked with them tiles, definitely worth the effort

18-08-2009, 05:40 PM
They do look great, are they plasticard?

18-08-2009, 06:35 PM
*thumbs up* Can't wait to give it a whirl *winks*

Oh is the rule winner keeps the board?

Know the feeling, here's my wip and half dream list:

- Relictor army (including the bastion thingy)
- Expand Word Bearers and Purge (apparantly there's stuff for them in the new IA book!)
- Wood Elf Mordheim band (and sisters of sigmar, beastmen, possessed and skaven etc...)
- Khemri Undead Warmaster army
- Rebuild Catachans
- Special IG project (may happen after Relictors)
- Kroot merc army (with non-GW minis and classics like the full old Slann range)
- Rebuild my speed freaks
......oh god I need 12 more hours in each day!
