I used to play LotR when I was in my early teens. I collected both good and bad guys, so far I have:

Rohan
Gondor
Fellowship
Uruk-Hai
Mordor Orcs
Rivendell Elves (golden armor)
Haradrim
Lots of other special characters/heroes

Same here, had a very active LotR period and at times I long to paint some more of them. When the pound went all south I went and bought some stuff at very cheap prizes so that then I get around to it again I can get small Dwarf, Gondor and Moria armies going ;)

Obviously, mine's a yes, given the thread that birthed this one.

WEhen I was at GW, I was the resident LOTR guru at the store. Gaming skills are a bit rusty these days, but the world knowledge is still there.

Hell I even named my son Beren, no joke.

That's awesome mate! :D

I do play now and again, I once had a very successful Minas Tirith force. I think the models are excellent to. I haven't kept up with it but I am considering expanding again because of the new supplement. :)

Yeah i play LotR, not had many games yet because my friends are still getting their forces together. One of my friends has played the new war of the ring, he says it's very very good. I'll give it a go soon, so looking forward to that. I've been a LotR fan for ages, me and some friends started playing MERP back in '88 when GW sold the supplements. :D

For the good guys i have 2nd age elves, Rohan army, and all the heroes painted up

For the bad guys i've got Isengard, 2nd age Mordor army with Sauron when he's a black knight

I have Sauron, and 5 of the ring wraiths, they're painted, and occasionally sauron does duty as a tzeentch Daemon prince, or as a greater daemon, but i don't play LotR.

My largest force is Dwarves (Erebor list) with a decent chunk of Minas Territh. I had a little bit of isenguard and some mordor but... thats about it. Wish there was more people to play around here but those are the breaks...

I have good sized Minas Tirth, Isenguard and Rohan armies.

Haven't painted or played for a few years, my interest dropped off when everybody stopped playing it.

I would like to see it popular again, hopefully the new rules system will bring that about.

Cheers

Dude, you really should. The game's awesome.
Add a cpl pf captains, banners, a shaman, and you've got a good 1000pts, of ass kicking white handers.

Just randomly, because I could, I now have converted 2 captains, a shaman and a banner bearer... next up, a troll or two and a ballista... Or three...

I also have a seletion of evil guys but never use them other than for Tornement as you have to have an evil and goood force.

Ive got loads of LoTR including a Mumak, the fellowship, several trolls(of various sorts) armies of minas tirith, rohan, dwarves, elves, mordor orks, isenguard, easterlings and haradrim...but idont play anymore because its so much more expensive than 40k or FB and the rules change or a new suppliment comes out every other month and i just dont have the cash to keep up...maybe ill get into it again oneday

Silver

Brother Bobo, you have to remember that the expansions of LotR can be treated similarly as Wh40k codices or WhFantasy armybooks - because many of them only feature rules for certain models, you don't have to buy them if you don't own the models just like you don't buy codices/armybooks of armies you don't own - unless you want to do so. ;)

I know but i have this thing with LoTR where i just want to have massive battles, and when theres a new supplement i just wanna start a whole new army...i gave up after khazard dum, but the new war of the ring supplement is designed for huge battles so i might get back into it when it comes out

1000 points of undefeated, fully painted dwarfs. Unforunatly, War of The Ring drops me to about 600, promting another box of warriors. But still, glad I'm not the only one who plays this.

See there's lots of us. LOTR should have it's own section, especially with War of The Ring coming out.
Come on admin, sort it out! :)

Silver
11-03-2009, 09:47 PM
But bear in mind that many people are against it. As is the norm in a democracy, let's solve this with a poll.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not against a seperate LotRs subforum. But even as a big fan I doubt it will get enough activity. We may have enough fans, but realistically I haven't seen more than a dozen LotR threads in the last six months.

Marticus
12-03-2009, 11:34 AM
as much as i hate to admit it.. heph i right yes there are fans here, but as he said the level of activity on lord of the rings bits is low... which is sad, lets start putting some more out there first, show admin we can be interested :) soo war of the rings.. whos played it in store yet :)

Perhaps we could even do a LotR tale of gamers sort ot thing after the 40K one is completed ;) Haven't played the demo yet, local store is going to have a huge battle in a few weeks. Hope to have time to drop in then. Did get my hands on the Army of the Dead and Ents and those were ace. The Movement trays are also very cool, I see quite a few modellers buying them merely for display purposes!

Trygon
12-03-2009, 11:46 AM
A LotR tale of gamers sounds like a interesting idea, but it should not interrupt the 40k and Fantasy competitions. There are too few LotR players for any dominating LotR competition to be worth it. Only around five active posters play the game and very few of them post models.

Though I strongly believe we should do a Warhammer Fantasy version first. There are more players of Fantasy then LotR so it would generally be more of a priority to carry out then the LotR version.

Hephesto

Quite true Trygon, would be fun to have a few of us with a dedicated LotR modelling log. Who knows might be able to find the time for a Far Harad army one of these days ;)

Might as well put that Mumakil, a dozen Mahud and some half-trolls to good use one of these days right!

Wraithlord
20-03-2009, 12:03 AM
There is no LOTR modelling log, so people dont know where to put it. And We dont need a big huge lotr thing, just a Army Lists and Rules, possibly fluff. Heck, they could a be a sub forum of other games, so it doen't bug people on the main page.

@ Trygon: I'd definately join in a LOTR tale to get an army going.

But yeah maybe we could have a gallery for "Other GW Games" as well?

japehlio
20-03-2009, 08:36 PM
@ Trygon, i agree, fantasy needs a bit more representation up in this house!

as for war of the ring, i liked the intro game, an was readin through the book and its so different to anything GW have done, also its not a supplement per se, more of a whole new game type, that will replace LotR as we know it

Wraithlord
24-03-2009, 11:17 PM
I won't say erplace, as I know a few people that just love going through the scenarios with the fellowship (I have a buddy with five frodo's) and the journey boxes (shelob's layer, weathertop, ect.) And that is how LOTR was supposed to be played. WOTR is made for people that play full armies, not a half-dozen heros and their attendants.

PS Admins, any word on whether or not we get an LOTR/Other games gallery, or since LOTR is a core game (for GW) maybe even a sub-forum for lists and ect.?

Trygon
25-03-2009, 11:22 AM
I agree that there should be an Other Games Gallery, but a whole sub forum or forum for Lord of the Rings alone in any way, shape or form is not necessary. There are literally only 5 players of the game on the entire site. They don't need all that space.

So not 5 after all. But considering half of these people are ether inactive or don't really play games that often, and that there are still more players of the other specialist games, it still doesn't call for LotR to get it's own board.

I'd love to do a LotR tale of gamers thing as well, though I'm lagging behind on my progres in the 40K tale of gamers >_<

Once I get the new rulebook (ordered yesterday), I'll have a look into how all this new stuff works. Shouldn't be too difficult to set up some sort of tale of gamers thing in which all of us, all 8 of us that is, could participate! I'd have to see all the rules first though, point goals are a tad tougher here as moria goblins for example are going to be a much larger army than say for example the Army of the Dead / Gondor alliance.

Gideon_Not_Ravenor
26-03-2009, 10:22 PM
The question is though, if another tale of blah blah was to happen, which system would it be for? We've got LoTR and WFB in line for it.

Trygon
26-03-2009, 10:29 PM
Well as I was saying before, it should be Warhammer Fantasy Battle. It is the second most popular game on the site and is represented by a sizeable portion of the boards. It more then deserves to be done first.

Hephesto
27-03-2009, 05:25 PM
Can't see why we couldn't do both. WHBF may be more popular, but this thread does give a nice indication that there would be people interested in a LotR tale of gamers initiative.

Silver
27-03-2009, 08:40 PM
I dunno...if the To8G version of 40k (being the most popular game on the site) ended up with only 3-4 or so members actively updating their armies, how would this ever work with Lotr?

Hephesto
27-03-2009, 09:00 PM
It could work and in the end nothing ventured is nothing gained ;)

But as said I'm awaiting my War of the Ring rulebook to see how we could this should be ever get around to it.

Have to catch up some serious work on my Relictors due to being ill and some other nasty stuff these last week and a half. But I'd be up to slowly rebuild my Isnegard forces, stripping my old Uruks right now and I've been waiting for an excuse to get those scouting uruk-hai of their sprues ;)

Whilst I would join fantasy or LOTR tale of etc I would prefer to see a fantasy one here. there are more members who play it. Though I like both, but don't have any LOTR. Played some games though, fun using fantasy themed miniatures in small groups and not regiment blocks.

Hephesto
29-03-2009, 01:23 AM
We could run both, most likely the people interested in LotR will not all be the same as those interesting in WHBF.

Gideon_Not_Ravenor
29-03-2009, 01:36 AM
Ah yes both. What about at the same time though or would it be one after the other?

Eodred
29-03-2009, 04:10 AM
You left me off that list Trygon.

I would be interested in doing a LotR/WotR tale of x gamers, as all my old stuff needs stripping.

I would even be able to paint models! Probably.
Due to the ease of assembly, what with the far fewer mould lines.

Let me know if it seems likely.

Cheers

Not sure if I'd be able to join in as my current work makes my other projects-progres extremely slow. I will, however, look into how to set-up a LotR tale of sort and I'd be more than happy to help coordinate the thing! Somebody else could do the exact same for WHFB, though if necessary I could work out some kind of system in line with what SIlver made for the 40K variant.

So a quick pre-emptive question, should be get around to a LotR-type of gamer's tale what would you guys prefer; normal LotR skirmish or the new War of the Ring set-up?

Personally I'm leaning in the direction of the War of the Ring as it suits better with the 6 month timb6e period normally associated with a tale of gamers. On the other hand it would force those participating to buy the rather pricey, though very nice, new rulebook. Other stuff will have to wait until I get my rulebook as it will take quite a bit of balancing to keep things both feasible and fun for all participants. A Moria horde for example will be very different from a Dwarf force and then there's the question of what stuff you'll need at the very least to play the game. So more in a week or two ;)

I've been playing LotR since 2005, and have acquired quite a collection of models. I have models from the following armies:
Rohan
Gondor (Men of Minas Tirith)
High Elves
Wood Elves
Mordor (Orcs, Ringwraiths, Sauron, Warg Riders)
Moria (Goblins & Cave Trolls)
Easterlings

I'm a big LotR fan actually. I must have spent in the thousands on it itself in the past, what I love about it are the models mainly, the sculpts are more detailed than that of 40k and WHFB (in my eyes at least) and I personally find them a lot more fun to paint. WotR is great aswell, finally a chance to use lots of my models in one game without having to spend hours and hours playing it, what more could you ask for? :)

Hephesto
03-04-2009, 01:10 AM
Slightly more difficult to convert if you don't have a lott of spares, but I love them for the same reason. Stuff like the Fellowship of the Rings orcs, the scouting uruk-hai and pretty much all facial expression in general are just great!

Red Corsairs
03-04-2009, 07:18 AM
The facial expressions are very good actually, all this time I've been wondering what makes me like them more but I think you just answered my question for me! Apart from the one on the newest Elrond, I despise that face.

And on conversions, when it comes to LotR I tend to Stick to the more simple weapon swaps for the same reason hephesto suggested.

I still have a soft spot for Orcs I think, especially the metals ones released in 2002, brilliant sculpts in my opinion. Though I am also very keen on the newest Morranon Orcs and the new Morranon Orc Command of which I'm building a couple of formations of for War of the Ring, who could argue against Def 7 Orcs? :)

Though there are a lot of Good models I'm a huge fan of aswell (the Monkey Twins are a good example).

15-04-2009, 10:26 AM
LOL on the monkey twins,
Yer I have collected lotr for about 6 years I think I have a bit of everything.
I think the wotr is great it's making bigger games more fun and it more for stratagies than Herod now also it's it makes it more appealing for more experianced players not just 5 year old beginers. But this is also annoying as I have 150 hobbits and you can't do a pure force of them and they cost like no points, but ow well I'm going to stick with my gondor, mordor, harad lists . Also finally they have made creatures like mumak tough and worth having XD
